Box Score FREDERICK, Md. - A furious rally fell short this afternoon as the Hood College men's soccer team fell to the Stevenson University Mustangs 4-3, in Commonwealth Conference action.
The Blazers took the 1-0 lead in the 13th minute when Chris Mahone (Baltimore, Md. / Sparrows Point) aimed a header just of reach of the keeper and into the net. The play started with a Hood free kick and Joey Fontanez (Severna Park, Md. / Chesapeake) quickly gave Christiano Pillari (Toms River. N.J. / Toms River North) a through ball, that led him to the end line. Pillari one-touched the cross into the middle and Mahone capitalized for his first career goal.
Two strikes by Stevenson's Yianni Sarioglou in the 23rd and 30th minutes gave the Mustangs the 2-1 edge.
The visitors struck again in the 44th minute when Christopher Panian put home his first goal of the game for a 3-1 halftime lead.
Panian made it a 4-1 game in the 58th minute when he was taken down in the box and awarded a penalty shot.
Eric Diehl (Gaithersburg, Md. / Damascus) gave Hood some life in the 62nd minute with his team-leading fifth goal. After a Stevenson foul, Diehl took the free kick from 20 yards out and found the back of the net, just out of reach for the Mustang keeper.
In the 81st minute Anthony Belnomi (Annapolis, Md. / St. Mary's) scored his first career goal to make it a 4-3 game, and gave the Blue and Grey a chance. His floater from 25 yards out fooled the keeper and sailed just under the crossbar.
Hood had one last chance to tie the match, but a shot near the final horn by Pillari was blocked.
Ian McDonald (Elkton, Md. / Northeast) faced 20 shots and made six saves for Hood. Ryan Callinan made three saves on three 13 shots in net for Stevenson.
Hood will play its final regular season game at Lycoming on November 2.
