Box Score

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Hood College women's basketball team dropped its season opener to the Dickinson College Red Devils 78-70 in the first game of the Days Inn Tip-Off Tournament, hosted by the Red Devils.

The two-day, four-team tournament also features Hollins University and fellow Commonwealth Conference member Widener University.

Dickinson's Mary Martin had a double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Blazers' freshman Danni Medovich (Woodsboro, Md. / Walkersville) scored 13 points in her debut to lead her team.

Medovich scored the first points of the game and season for Hood to take a 2-0 lead at 19:10.

After both teams traded baskets and the lead, Allie Appleby (Bel Air, Md. / C. Milton Wright) converted a traditional three-point play to give the Blazers a 16-15 lead at 10:57. That started a 10-2 run for Hood that lasted until 5:01 remaining in the half, with the visitors up 23-17. The six-point difference was Hood's largest lead in the game, highlighted by Medovich's first career three-point basket.

Momentum soon turned to the Red Devils as they put a few mini-runs together and rode a 37-33 lead into the locker room.

Medovich had 11 points at the half, with six coming in the last three minutes, and Eboni Staples (Laurel, Md. / Don Bosco Cristo Rey) chipped in with seven points and five rebounds.

The Blazers battled back in the opening minutes of the second half, tying the game at 45-45 and 49-49 before Dickinson started to pull away. Staples went on a 5-0 run and brought Hood within one, 41-40, at 16:45. Rachel Kessler (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) added four points and converted the jumper to even the score at 45-45. Brittney George (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) tied the game at 49, but then the game started to get away from the young team.

Dickinson followed with a 13-2 run that lasted the next three minutes, and put Hood down 64-51. Erica Buls led the charge with seven points in a row, and Sarah Phillips added four.

Jessy Burke (Monrovia, Md. / Linganore) ended the drought with a jumper at 8:33, and George added a bucket to bring Hood back within single digits at 64-55.

The Blazers found themselves trying to trim the lead throughtout the remaining 7:50 but the closest they could get was six points off a Taylor McGaughey (New Market, Md. / Oakdale) jumper with three seconds left.

The Red Devils had four players in double-digits: Martin, Buls (16 points, eight rebounds), Phillips (11 points, six rebounds), and Liz Schultz (10 points).

Staples (12 points, seven rebounds) and Burke (10 points) joined Medovich in double-digits for Hood.

The Blazers shot 45.8 percent (27-59) and 18.2 percent (2-11) from the floor and beyond the arc respectively.

Dickinson shot 44.8 percent (26-58) from the floor and 20 percent (1-5) from three-point range.

Hood outrebounded the Red Devils 41-36, but committed five more turnovers, 19-14. Dickinson was quick to capitalize off the mistakes, and scored 24 points off of turnovers.

The Blazer freshmen racked up a total of 53 total points in their first career action.

Hood will play in the consolation game tomorrow night at 6 p.m. against Hollins University
