Box Score WINCHESTER, Va. – Hood's Reggie Daniels (Abingdon, Md. / Patterson Mill) and Justin Bowens (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) had double-doubles, but Shenandoah's duo of Avery Green and Jared Carithers combined for 49 points as the Hornets outlasted the Blazers 76-71 in the championship game of the BB&T Tip-Off Tournament at SU.
Bowens' double-double was the first of his career, while Daniels' was the second of his career.
Bowens had 12 points and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds. The senior guard added a team-high four assists and two steals to his evening.
Daniels hit 4-of-8 field goals to finish with 12 points, hauled in 10 boards and blocked two shots.
The pair helped the Blazers outrebound Shenandoah 55-42 on the night. The 55 rebounds were the most for Hood since the team grabbed a school record 67 against PSU-Harrisburg on November 17, 2007.
Chris Cook (Mechanicsville, Va. / Cumberland Valley) led Hood with 16 points on 4-of-9 shooting. He sank both of his three-point attempts and went 6-of-8 from the line. Cameron Cook (Baltimore, Md. / Calvert Hall) added 11 points and became just the fourth player in school history to top 1,200 career points.
For the Hornets, Green hit 11-of-16 field goals and finished with a game-high 29 points. Carithers shot just 8-of-21, but found his way to 20 points on the night.
SU appeared to pull away near the end of the first half, after back-to-back scores by Carithers and a bucket by Green made it 33-23 with 1:11 left in the opening period. Hood battled back with a Terrell Buyck (District Heights, Md. / Bishop McNamara) layup and a three by Cade Woody (Damascus, Md. / Damascus) in the half's final minute to cut it to 33-28 at the break.
The Blazers trailed in the early going of the second half, but a three-point field goal by Chris Cook started a 10-2 run that saw Hood go on top 45-41 after a Matt Galloway (Sterling, Va. / Potomac Falls) three with 14:04 to go.
There were 11 ties or lead changes over the next eight minutes before the Blazers went on a short run. Bowens made a layup with 5:50 to play to put Hood ahead 62-60. Chris Cook followed with a three and and after a free throw by Shenandoah, Cameron Cook's layup put the Blazers on top 67-61 with 4:51 to play.
Green quickly sank a three to cut Hood's lead in half and a lay in by Carithers with 2:57 to play chipped Hood's lead to just 67-66. The two squads traded trips to the free throw line with a pair by Green eventually giving the Hornets a 70-68 lead with 1:33 on the clock. Bowens pulled the Blazers within one with another free throw, but Xavier Alston converted a second chance layup at the other end with 34 seconds to play for the three-point lead, 72-69.
Hood had two chances on its next trip, but Alston hauled in a rebound and the Blazers were forced to foul.
The Blazers host Gallaudet in their home opener on November 21 at 8 p.m.
