Box Score FREDERICK, Md. – Hood College's Chris Cook (Mechanicsville, Va. / Lee-Davis) scored a game-high 18 points, but Stevenson outlasted the Blazers 79-76 at BB&T Arena.
Hood (2-2, 0-1 Commonwealth Conference) trailed 56-44 after a three-point field goal by Darius Walker with 11:56 to go in the contest before mounting a comeback. Justin Bowens (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) started the Blazer run with a layup to cut the deficit to 10 points 41 seconds later. A three by Matt Galloway (Sterling, Va. / Potomac Falls), another lay in by Bowens and a three-pointer by Cameron Cook (Baltimore, Md. / Calvert Hall) chipped the lead to 56-54 with 9:34 on the clock.
Justin Kuntz stopped the 10-0 run with a free throw, but a jumper by Reggie Daniels (Abingdon, Md. / Patterson Mill) brought Hood within one at 57-56 less than a minute later. Kuntz stretched the lead back to three with a field goal, but back-to-back lay ups by Chris Cook put the Blazers ahead 60-59 with 8:09 to play.
A pair of free throws by Kuntz briefly reclaimed the lead for the Mustangs, but four straight points by Asa Smith (Cheltenham, Md. / Paul VI Catholic (Va.)) put Hood back in front. Cook completed a three-point play with 6:27 left to stretch the Blazer lead to six, 67-61.
The Blazers still lead by five, 69-64, with 4:55 to go after a lay up by Cook, but a basket by Stefon McCray and a three-point play by Walker tied the game with four minutes on the game clock.
On Stevenson's (5-1, 2-0) next possession, the Mustangs got multiple offensive rebounds before McCray put the ball in for a 71-69 lead.
Cook tallied his game-high 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting and 6-of-8 from the free throw line. He also had three assists and two steals in the contest. He scored 13 points in the second half.
Bowens added a dozen points and led Hood with seven rebounds and tied Daniels for the team-high with four assists. Daniels led all players with three blocked shots.
Galloway was a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc and hit 3-of-4 from the charity stripe to finish with 12 points off the bench.
Christian Roberts paced Stevenson with 17 points. Walker chipped in with 12 points and Alfonzo Hawkins and Ryan Hill had 10 apiece. McCray had a game-high 11 rebounds.
Hood wraps up three-game homestand on December 7 when Lycoming comes to BB&T Arena for an 8 p.m. tip off.
