Box Score FREDERICK, Md. - A last-second basket ended the Hood College women's basketball team's two-game winning streak, as the Arcadia University Knights defeated the Blazers 59-57 in Commonwealth Conference action this afternoon.
With the game tied up at 57-57 after two missed free throws by the Knights, the Blazers had the chance for the win but a turnover at mid-court gave the visitors the ball with 6.8 seconds on the clock.
Victoria Mazzeo drove to the basket, and with the Blazers not willing to foul, laid in the uncontested shot with under one second left, and the last-second heave by Verkia Smith (Waldorf, Md. / North Point) didn't fall and the buzzer sounded.
Hood trailed by 10 early in the second half, but battled back and tied the game at 57-57 thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers by Danni Medovich (Woodsboro, Md. / Walkersville), making both in the final minute, including the game-tying shot with 26.8 seconds left.
Medovich finished with a team-high 14 points and Rachel Wiley (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) recorded her fourth double-double of the year with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
Samantha Caliguiri scored a game-high 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting and Mazzeo added 10 rebounds to her four points.
Hood started out strong in the first half and Rachel Kessler (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) hit a jumper to give the Blazers the 14-8 lead at 12:51. The Knights responded with a 9-0 run over the next couple minutes to take a 17-14 lead with 11:04 left in the half. Caliguiri hit the big 3-pointer to give Arcadia the lead.
Back-to-back layups by Jessy Burke (Monrovia, Md. / Linganore) and Medovich gave Hood the 22-19 lead with 8:29 remaining in the half. Eboni Staples (Laurel, Md. / Don Bosco Cristo Rey) gave the Blazers a 23-21 lead, but Arcadia responded with an 11-2 run that lasted the final 6:34, and resulted in a 32-25 haltime lead.
Burke, Medovich, and Brittney George (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) all had six points at the half. Caliguiri had 13 to lead all scorers after the first 20 minutes.
Over the first five minutes of the second half, Arcadia started to pick up the pressure on defense and built up a 39-29 lead.
With the score at 41-31, Taylor McGaughey (New Market, Md. / Oakdale) hit her first three of the game to cut the lead to 41-34 with 12:52 left. McGaughey then hit a jumper with 12:11 on the clock to cut the lead to 43-36.
After an Arcadia timeout, George hit a layup with 11 minutes on the clock get Hood within 43-38. The Blazers' defense forced a turnover and shot clock violation in back-to-back possessions, but could not capitalize on the extra opportunities.
With 9:13 left, McGaughey hit another three to cut the Arcadia lead to three at 44-41. Imani Austin ended the Knights' two minute scoring drought with a 3-pointer of her own to extend the lead to 47-41 with 7:42 remaining in the game.
Wiley hit a jumper to cut the lead to 49-43 with just under six minutes on the clock, and hit another layup with 4:00 on the clock to make it a 51-45 game. After a missed shot, Wiley grabbed the rebound and put in back in with 2:03 left the cut the lead to 54-49.
A steal and layup by Smith got Hood within three at 54-51 with 91 seconds on the clock. A traveling violation by the Knights gave the Blazers the ball with 1:15 left, but they could not get a shot to fall.
Medovich hit her first of her threes with 57 seconds left to make it a 55-54 game to start a nerve-racking last minute.
Arcadia shot 60 percent (3-of-5) from beyond the arc and Hood shot a season-high 44 percent (4-of-9).
For the first time in three games the Blazers got outrebounded and failed to grab 50 boards, with the Knights holding the 42-41 advantage. Hood did have 10 second chance points and held Arcadia to one.
Wiley and Smith both had a game-high four assists as the Blazers had 14 helpers, and the Knights recorded nine.
The women look to get back in the win column when they take on Albright College on Janaury 15, at 6 p.m. in BB&T Arena.
