Hood Defeats Stevenson, Wins Third Straight

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - A goal by Joey Fontanez (Severn Park, Md. / Chesapeake) in the 68th minute lifted Hood College to its third straight win, a 2-1 victory over Stevenson in Commonwealth Conference action.

With the match tied at 1-1, Fontanez dribbled the ball on the right side, moved towards the middle, and took a shot that somehow weaved its way past three defenders and the goalkeeper into the net for the game-winner.

Drew Demich (Jefferson, Md. / Brunswick), who ran his goal scoring streak to three matches, gave Hood an early 1-0 lead. In the 11th minute, he took the ball from a Mustang defender on the right side. The sophomore stepped over and fired a shot from to the far post for his eighth goal of the year.

Barely a minute later, the Blazers had another excellent chance, but Christiano Pillari's (Toms River, N.J. / Toms River North) shot was tipped just over the crossbar by Ryan Callinan.

Off a free kick by Stevenson in the 28th minute, Reid Hawkins' had a header saved by Henry Mills (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) and Hood went on the attack. The ball found its way to Demich, who dropped a pass back to Juliano Pillari (Toms River, N.J. / Toms River). Callinan once again turned away the Blazers' opportunity.

Stevenson pushed the ball with numbers in the 35th minute before Mills turned away a shot by Adnan Alic.

The Mustangs tied the game on the first shot for either team in the second half, as Calvin Granger took an assist from Hawkins in the 54th minute. Three minutes later Adam Diabagate appeared to be out of a play when he went down in the box. He quickly jumped up as the ball ricocheted to him and fired a shot, but Mills displayed quick reflexes with a dive to his left to preserve the tie.

Mills came up with another big save after Fontanez gave Hood the lead. Yianni Sarioglou fired a shot from the close right wing, but the freshman played the angle and did not give the Mustang a window to shot into.

Sarioglou had a header in the 88th minute, but the Hood defense cleared the ball off the line. Mills intercepted a cross just seconds later to seal the win.

Fontanez's decisive score was his first goal of the season. With eight goals this year, Demich is tied for fifth on the single season leaderboard at Hood. He is the first Blazer to score in three consecutive matches since Eric Diehl in 2010.

Mills had his second-straight match with seven saves. The Stevenson goal was the first allowed by Hood's defense in 251:25 of game action.

Callinan had six saves for Stevenson.

The win improved the Blazers to 7-4 on the season and 2-0 in the Commonwealth Conference. It is the first time Hood has started conference play with consecutive victories in school history and the seven overall wins are one shy of the single season record. The victory was Hood's first over the Mustangs in 10 meetings between the two sides.

The Blazers travel to Arcadia on October 11.
