Box Score READING, Pa. - A goal by Josh Wollaston in the 81st minute broke a scoreless tie as Alvernia outlasted Hood College 1-0 in Commonwealth Conference action.
The two teams entered the day tied for fourth in the conference and looking to seal a spot in the league playoffs. The Crusaders locked up the fourth seed with the win. With the loss and a victory by Lebanon Valley, the Blazers end up sixth in the regular season, just outside of the tournament.
The match was a defensive struggle all afternoon until Devin Wilt crossed the ball to Wollaston at the top of the box, who curled it in for the game-winner on what proved to be the final shot for either side.
Paul Windsor (Mount Airy, Md. / Urbana) had a shot on goal in the second minute, but Hood did not put another shot on net until the second half.
Drew Demich (Jefferson, Md. / Brunswick) nearly scored for the Blazers in the 55th minute, but an Alvernia defender stopped the shot with the goalkeeper out of position. Joseph Fawley (Knoxville, Md. / Brunswick) was turned away by the keeper 11 seconds later to end an offensive flurry by Hood.
Juliano Pillari (Toms River, N.J. / Toms River North) had a shot in the 60th minute and Demich put the ball on net just two minutes before the Crusaders broke through.
Henry Mills (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) was strong in goal, stopping seven shots.
Zach Rider made four saves in the shutout.
Hood finishes the year with eight victories, tied for the school record and the most since 2006.
