Big Second Half Not Enough in Captains Shootout Championship

Box Score

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The duo of Terell Buyck (Forestville, Md. / Bishop McNamara) and Davon Hill (Clinton, Md. / Potomac School) scored 41 of Hood College's 51 second half points, but Christopher Newport held on for a 75-68 win in the championship game of the Crowne Plaza Captains Shootout.

After the game, Buyck and Chris Cook (Mechanicsville, Va. / Lee-Davis) were named to the all-tournament team.

Buyck set a new career-high for the third time this season with 23 points - all in the second half. The senior was 6-of-13 from the field and a career-best 5-of-9 from 3-point range. He sank all six of his free throw attempts and grabbed five rebounds.

Hill scored 18 of his 20 in the second half, finishing 7-of-16 from the floor, 2-of-3 on threes and 4-of-4 at the line.

Cook was limited to just 23 minutes by foul trouble, but still managed 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting. He led the team with three steals. Reggie Daniels (Abingdon, Md. / Patterson Mill) continued to be effective in the paint, blocking five shots to run his two-day total to 11. Trevor Magnuski (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) led the team with eight rebounds and four assists.

Neither team shot well in the first half, but the Captains managed to carry a 26-17 lead into halftime. Both teams regrouped during the break and shot well over 50 percent during the second half.

Trailing 33-23 two minutes into the second half, a jumper by Hill started a 16-5 run. Hill and Buyck accounted for all the scoring during the spree, including a 3-pointer by Buyck that gave the Blazers a 39-38 lead with 14:03 on the clock.

A layup by Daniels gave Hood a 43-39 lead a little over a minute later before Christopher Newport went on a run. The Captains outscored the Blazers 15-1 over the next five minutes to claim a 54-44 lead.

Hood pulled within six twice during the final minute, but CNU was able to hold on for the victory.

Marcus Carter led the Captains with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Mike Cherry knocked down four 3-pointers on his way to 14 points. Connor Laframboise added 12 points and Aaron McFarland came off the bench for 10.

Carter was named the tournament's most valuable player and Cherry joined him on the all-tournament team. Worcester State's Paul Brooks rounded out the all-tournament squad.

Hood, 4-6 on the year, is back in action at the Johns Hopkins Blue Jay Invitational on January 2-3.
