Hood Falls to Alvernia on Senior Night

Box Score

FREDERICK, Md. - Playing in the final regular season home game of their careers, Hood College's Cameron Cook (Baltimore, Md. / Calvert Hall) and Justin Bowens (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) each scored 20 points, but it was not enough as Alvernia toppled the Blazers on Senior Night, 76-72.

Cook finished 6-of-14 from the floor and went 4-of-10 from 3-point range. He made his 300th career 3-pointer in the game, ending the night with 302.

Bowens set a new career-high with his 20-point evening. The guard made 6-of-10 field goals and was 8-of-10 at the free throw line. He had four rebounds and four assists.

With the loss, the Hood will be the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Commonwealth Conference Championships. The Blazers will host an opponent to be determined on Monday, February 24 at BB&T Arena.

Hood (16-8, 10-7 Commonwealth Conference) opened the game with a 12-4 run fueled by five points by Matt Galloway (Sterling, Va. / Potomac Falls). But a 15-6 run by the Crusaders (16-7, 12-5) gave Alvernia the lead after a three by Charles Cooper with 7:36 left in the first half.

Chris Cook (Mechanicsburg, Va. / Lee-Davis) responded with a 3-pointer to reclaim the lead for Hood. Another run by the Crusaders put Alvernia on top 33-25 with 3:38 left in the half after a Kahlil Bennett three.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Cameron Cook and Cade Woody (Damascus, Md. / Damascus) brought the Blazers back within a score, 33-31, less than a minute later. A traditional 3-point play by Tanner Ruths (Stephens City, Va. / Sherando) with 41 seconds left cut the lead to 37-36, but Bennett sank another shot from behind the arc to send the Crusaders into the locker room ahead by four, 40-36.

Hood shot 54 percent in the first half, but Alvernia committed just two turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.

The Blazers trailed 55-46, but Hood surged back and pulled within three after Davon Hill (Clinton, Md. / Potomac School) connected on a three with 13:22 to go in the game to make it 57-54. Brian Parker tried to build the Crusaders some breathing room, but two free throws by Cameron Cook made it 59-56 with 8:47 to go.

Cooper answered with another three and the Blazers were never able to get closer than four the rest of the way.

Chris Cook gave Hood three players in double figures with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Reggie Daniels (Abingdon, Md. / Patterson Mill) led the team with eight rebounds and two blocks.

Bennett and Cooper each scored 20 for Alvernia. Harrison Deyo added 16 points and nine rebounds, while Parker scored a dozen points. Chris Davis dished out eight assists and had three steals.

Both teams shot 48 percent from the field. Hood connected on 9-of-25 3-point attempts (36 percent), while the Crusaders hit 7-of-22 (32 percent). The Blazers went 15-of-20 from the free throw line, compared to 13-of-19 for Alvernia (68 percent).

Hood wraps up the regular season at Lycoming on Saturday, February 22 at 3 p.m.
