Box Score FREDERICK, Md. - Allie Appleby (Bel Air, Md. / C. Milton Wright) banked in the game-tying 3-pointer with 10 seconds left in the second half, and banked in the game-winning long ball with 0.8 seconds remaining in overtime to lead Hood College to a 66-63 win over the Alvernia Crusaders in Commonwealth Conference actions.
The Blazers, playing in their last home game of the season, never trailed in overtime but found themselves in a 63-63 game with the ball and 28 seconds to go. Verkia Smith (Waldorf, Md. / North Point) held the ball until the final seconds and dished it out to Appleby who took the off-balance shot and banked it in.
Hood trailed 58-54 after Kaitlyn Yoh hit two free throws with 57 seconds left regulation. Brittney George (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) then converted the traditional 3-point play to cut the deficit to 58-57 with just over 40 seconds on the clock. Yoh hit two more free throws with 26 seconds remaining to extend the lead to 60-57, the Crusaders last lead of the game. After Appleby's tying shot, Alvernia committed a turnover and the Blazers had 3.8 seconds to try to win the game. However, the half-court heave fell short as the buzzer sounded.
George and Danni Medovich (Woodsboro, Md. / Walkersville) both led Hood with 13 points apiece. George shot 9-of-14 (64 percent) from the charity stripe, a new career-high for made free throws. Appleby's buckets were her only two of the game and she also recorded a steal and a block. Rachel Wiley (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) blocked four shots and a team-high 15 boards.
Alvernia's Tyra Roberts recorded a double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds. Yoh scored 15 and was 9-of-9 from the line. Alisa Greco rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.
Hood jumped out to a 6-0 lead within the first 2:30 of the game with baskets from Smith, Medovich, and Wiley. With 16:08 left in the half, Medovich hit a 3-pointer to put the Blazers up 9-3. Jessy Burke (Monrovia, Md. / Linganore) added a free throw to give the hosts a 10-point lead at 22-12 with under 10 minutes to go in the half.
Medovich gave Hood its largest lead of the game at 30-17 with just over four minutes remaining, with her eighth and ninth points of the half.
The Crusaders responded with a 9-0 run to close the gap to 30-26, but with six seconds left in the half Alexis Briscoe (Columbia, Md. / Long Reach) hit her first of two shots from beyond the arc. The Blazers went into the half leading 33-26.
Just over two minutes into the second half, Yoh brought Alvernia within one at 34-33 with her first points of the second stanza. After a period of more than four minutes where neither team could score, Ann Walker hit a jumper to give the Crusaders their first lead of the game at 35-34 with 13:42 remaining.
With 9:56 on the clock Lindsey D'Agostino hit a triple to give the guests their largest lead of the game at 46-41. They were able to maintain the lead until 5:42 when George hit her third free throw in 23 seconds to tie it at 51-51.
The Crusader lead plateaued at one and two points down the strech until Yoh's free throws that extended it to four to set up the dramatic finish.
Appleby and Briscoe each hit two of Hood's seven 3-pointers on the night.
The Blazers outrebounded Alvernia 49-45. That led to a 17-11 second chance point advantage for Hood. The Blue and Grey committed a season-low 14 turnovers on the night. The Blazer reserves outscored the Crusader bench 23-12.
Hood wil play its final game of regular season on the road against Lycoming on February 22. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
