Box Score FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College men's soccer team set the single season records for goals, assists and points, but needed to hold on for a 3-2 win over visiting Alvernia in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth play.
The Blazers entered the game with 46 goals, 33 assists and 125 points, each of which tie the 2006 team's school records. After the 90 minutes of action, Hood had 49 goals, 34 assists and 132 points.
With the victory, the Blazers improve to 12-5 overall and 3-2 in the MAC Commonwealth.
Christiano Pillari (Toms River, N.J. / Toms River North) put Hood on the scoreboard in the ninth minute. After a corner kick by Hood, the Crusdader defense tried to clear the ball, but popped it up. The ball came down in front of Pillari near the top of the box and he drilled it home for a 1-0 lead.
The Blazers extended the lead in the 30th minute. Juliano Pillari (Toms River, N.J. / Toms River North) sent a cross in from the right side of the box. Romo Monarrez (Guadalajara, Mexico / West Nottingham Academy (Md.)) leapt and headed the ball in for his sixth marker of the season. Pillari's assist was his MAC Commonwealth-leading eighth of the year.
Alvernia was awarded a penalty kick at 66 exactly and Jay Ringer converted to cut Hood's lead in half.
Just over two minutes later, early in the 69th minute, the Crusaders were called for a foul. Drew Demich (Jefferson, Md. / Brunswick) lined up the free kick and placed it perfectly into the upper right corner of the goal for a 3-1 lead and his 19th goal of the season.
Alvernia kept the pressure on and again pulled within a goal, when Vincent Biche finished off a cross from Rocky Elgogari.
Joe Centeno (Mount Airy, Md. / Linganore) made five saves for the Blazers.
Zach Rider stopped three shots for Alvernia.
Hood travels to Lycoming, who sits in first place in the MAC Commonwealth, on Saturday, October 24.
