Box Score FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College women's volleyball team won its seventh straight match with a 3-1 victory over visiting Mount Aloysius.
Set scores were 25-20, 19-25, 25-15, 25-17.
The win streak matches the seven consecutive wins by the 1999 squad, the most on record at Hood.
Elena Young (Hagerstown, Md. / South Hagerstown) continued her strong play with a match-high 16 kills and three aces. She and Caroline Kinna (Frederick, Md. / Walkersville) each had three blocks, while Kinna netted a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs. Kari Betson (Frederick, Md. / Frederick) picked up 23 digs.
Payton Belella (Smithsburg, Md. / Smithsburg) had 38 assists and 13 digs in the match. She moved into third place on the single season list at Hood with 563 total assists.
The win was the 11th of the year for the Blazers, the most since 2005.
Hood held the Mounties to a hitting percentage of -.069 in the first set, but Mount Aloysius regrouped and had 14 kills against just three errors in the second set to even the match.
The Blazers took control of the match in the third set behind the serving of Kathryn Jones (Newfane, N.Y. / Newfane). With the senior serving to lead off the set, Hood jumped out to a 7-0 lead. In the decisive fourth set, Young had three kills during a 10-3 run that put the Blazers ahead 19-11.
Megan Ruddock had nine kills and three blocks for the Mounties. Katie Reed dished out 16 assists, three more than teammate Jordan DeMasi. Brenna Wright added 14 digs.
The match served as the Blazers' annual pink match. Donations to benefit the Hurwitz Breast Cancer Fund were collected at the door.
Hood looks to stay in the win column on Friday, October 9 at 7 p.m. when McDaniel visits BB&T Arena.
