Blazers Head to Albright in Commonwealth Action

FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College women's basketball team travels to Albright College this Tuesday, February 17 for a Commonwealth Conference matchup at 6 p.m.

SCOUTING HOOD

The Blazers are 5-18 overall and 3-11 in the Commonwealth Conference. Senior Rachel Wiley (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) leads Hood, averaging  a double-double with 11.6 points per game and her 11.4 rebounds per game is third best in the conference. Wiley also has a team-high 42 blocks. Classmate Rachel Kessler (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) adds 7.9 points per game, and leads the team in steals with 55 on the season. Verkia Smith (Waldorf, Md. / North Point) has a team-high 54 assists and also averages six points per game.

LAST TIME OUT

On Saturday, the Blazers fell to the first-place Stevenson Mustangs, 85-58. Smith led the Blazers with 10 points and had three assists. Brittney George (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) came in as a reserve and notched nine points.Wiley had seven points and seven rebounds, and added three blocks. Briana Lee (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) had seven points and a career-high five steals. Kristin Histand (Charlottesville, Va. / Miller School of Albemarle) went 2-of-2 from 3-point range for her six points. Hood committed 28 turnovers in the game, but also had 18 steals while forcing Stevenson into 27 miscues.

SCOUTING ALBRIGHT

The Albright College Lions are 17-6 overall and 11-3 in the Commonwealth Conference so far this season. Kelecia Harris leads the Lions in scoring, averaging 15.8 points per game this year, while shooting 61 percent from the floor. Harris is also leading the team in the paint with a team-high 11.2 rebounds per game and 38 blocks on the season. Shannon Thomas is second in scoring for the Lions scoring 11.1 points a game, and dishing out a team-high 86 assists. Jane Joyce also adds over 9 points a game, and leads the team with 40 steals on the season.

LAST MEETING

The Blazers lost to Albright earlier this season on Jan 17, 68-60. Wiley had a double-double with 18 points on 8-of-15 shooting and 14 rebounds. She added two steals and two blocks. Allie Appleby (Bel Air, Md. / C. Milton Wright) had a season-high 14 points and was 4-of-6 from 3-point range.Kessler added 10 points andSmith had four assists. Hood outrebounded Albright 45-44. Shannon Thomas led the Lions with 22 points and was 3-of-5 from distance. Kelecia Harris had a double-double with 15 points and 17 rebounds, and added five blocks.
