Box Score FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College's Alexis Andrukat (Smithsburg, Md. / Smithsburg) came off the bench to lead the Blazers with a career-high 17 points, but it was not enough in a loss against Alvernia, 58-56.
Andrukat went 6-of-9 from the floor, along with seven rebounds and three assists. Rachel Wiley (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) notched her 11th double-double of the season with 13 points and 17 rebounds. The senior also had four blocks and went 5-of-8 from the free throw line. Alexis Briscoe (Columbia, Md. / Long Reach) had eight rebounds and three blocks, and Verkia Smith (Waldorf, Md. / North Point) had a team-high five assists.
Alvernia jumped ahead, 20-7 early in the first half, but the Blazers went on a 19-3 run over the final 10 minutes. Briana Lee's (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) 3-point field goal with three seconds remaining finished the run to give Hood a 26-23 lead at halftime.
Three straight baskets from Andrukat and a jump shot from Brittney George (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) kept the Blazers ahead 40-36 with 12 minutes on the clock in the second half.
The Crusaders responded with a 19-8 run to pull ahead of Hood 55-49 with 4:50 on the clock. The Blazers scored four in a row to pull within one point (55-54) with 1:18 to go, but Alvernia sank three final free throws to clinch the win, 58-56.
Tyra Roberts led Alvernia with a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. She went 7-of-9 from the foul line and blocked five shots. Mya Lobb added 13 points and three steals. Chelsea Ebersole had 10 points and Stevie Fortna had six steals.
Hood's second unit outscored Alvernia's bench, 32-1, and the Blazers outrebounded the Crusaders 59-42.
Hood remains home for a conference game against Widener on February 11.
