Hood Claims Season Opener over Goucher, 3-1

Box Score

FREDERICK, Md. - Three different Blazers found the back of the net as the Hood College men's soccer team picked up a 3-1 win over Goucher in the season opener for both sides.

The Blazers struck first with the lone goal of the first half. Paul Windsor (Mount Airy, Md. / Urbana) was fouled in the box and converted the penalty kick for a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute.

The sophomore's strike stood until the teams combined for three goals during a 10-minute stretch late in the second half.

Hood extended its lead with what proved to be the game-winner by Joe Benton (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley). Elmer Diaz (Damascus, Md. / Damascus) touched the ball to an open spot and Juliano Pillari (Toms River. N.J. / Toms River North) played the loose ball. The junior took it into the right corner, then crossed the ball Benton across the net. Benton, with the defense now coming to him, struck the ball back to the far post for a 2-0 lead in the 72nd minute.

Exactly five minutes later, Ryan Matthews scored off a header right in front of the net with an assist from Ellis Martin to cut Hood's lead in half.

Just over five minutes after that, midway through the 82nd minute, Drew Demich (Jefferson, Md. / Brunswick) scored his first goal of the season. He took the ball in front of the Blazers' bench with two defenders closing in. The junior faked one Gopher, causing him to go to the ground, and then made his way past the second. Demich got deep into the box and launched a shot low to the far post for a 3-1 lead.

The goal moved Demich into fourth place all-time at Hood in both goals (15) and points (34).

The Blazers outshot the Gophers 17-6 in the contest. Joe Centeno (Mount Airy, Md. / Linganore), in his first start for Hood, needed just one save in net.

Daniel Hendry had six saves for Goucher.

It was the first win in a season opener for the Blazers since 2011, also over Goucher in a season opener.

Next, Hood heads to Fredericksburg, Va. for the UMW Soccer Classic. The Blazers play Marymount (Va.) on September 5 at 3:30 p.m. On September 6, Hood squares off with the hosts from Mary Washington at 1 p.m.
