FREDERICK, Md. - In a meet that came down to the final event of the day, Hood College picked up a 125-119 win over Albright in Middle Atlantic Conference women's swimming.
After the meet's second intermission, the Blazers trailed the Lions, 106-105.
When action resumed, Lauren Fogarty's (Arnold, Md. / Broadneck) winning time of 2:22.75 in the 200-yard individual medley helped Hood keep pace at 115-114.
That meant that the victor of the final women's race of the day, the 200 freestyle relay would win the meet. The Blazers' quartet of Brittany Whitham (Fort Collins, Colo. / Resurrection Christian), Shannon McHale (Hauppage, N.Y. / Hauppage), Sarah Elkhoga (Pasadena, Md. / Chesapeake) and Brianna Hand-Solomon (Dover, Del. / Dover) sprinted to a 1:48.90, almost three seconds faster than Albright's squad, to deliver victory to Hood.
Fogarty and Ashley Griffin (LIttlestown, Pa. / Delone Catholic) had big days, winning four times apiece. McHale won three times. Hand-Solomon and Elkhoga were two-time winners and Whitham picked up a victory.
In addition to Fogarty's first place finish in the 200 IM, she scored individual wins in the 100 breaststroke and the 100 butterfly. Her time of 1:15.78 won the 100 breast and she touched the wall first in the 100 fly in 1:02.85.
Griffin dominated the freestyle events, winning the 50, 100 and 200. She won the 50 by over a second in 25.69, defeating Hand-Solomon's second place time of 26.66. Her 56.81 won the 100 in nearly three seconds and she won by five seconds in the 200 with a time of 2:06.40.Â
Hand-Solomon notched a win in the 100 back in 1:06.79.Â
McHale edged Hand-Solomon for the win in the 200 back with a time of 2:24.00, to give Hand-Solomon two second place finishes on the day. McHale had a runner up finish of her own in the 200 fly with a time of 2:29.39.
McHale, Fogarty, Elkhoga and Griffin combined to win the day's opening event, the 200 medley relay, in 1:59.78.
Hood's victory improved the Blazers to 5-5 on the year and 5-3 in the Middle Atlantic Conference.
The meet was Hood's final home meet of the 2015-16 season. The Blazers travel to Misericordia on January 23 at 2 p.m.
