Box Score READING, Pa. - Three players scored in double figures for Hood College, but the Blazers fell 70-58 at Alvernia in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action.
Alexis Andrukat (Smithsburg, Md. / Smithsburg) had 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals to lead Hood. Alexis Briscoe (Columbia, Md. / Long Reach) came off the bench for 12 points, three steals and two blocks. Taylor McGaughey (New Market, Md. / Oakdale) scored 10 points. Verkia Smith (Waldorf, Md. / North Point) led the team with eight boards and tallied three steals.
The Blazers forced 28 turnovers and had 19 steals in the contest, but could not overcome a career-high 22 points from the Crusaders' Morgan Downs. She had 12 rebounds for a double-double. Miranda Hoover added 11 boards. Both players had three blocked shots.
Chelsea Ebersole came off the bench for 13 points.
Hood fell behind 7-0 to start the game, but responded a 12-4 run. Briscoe scored seven points in the run, including a free throw that put the Blazers ahead 12-11 with nine minutes, 29 seconds left in the second quarter. The Crusaders immediately answered back with an 18-6 flurry for a 29-19 lead after a jumper by Downs with 3:35 to go in the period. Alvernia led 35-27 at the half.
In the third quarter, the Blazers scored the first six points to pull within 35-33 after a pair of Andrukat free throws. Alvernia again answered a Hood spurt with a run of its own, outscoring the Blazers 19-6 over the remainder of the quarter for a 54-39 lead.
Hood travels to Messiah on February 10 for a 6 p.m. tip off.
