Men's Soccer Stops Drew in Season Opener

MADISON, N.J. - The Hood College men's soccer team scored twice in the first half to defeat the hosts in the Drew Fall Festival, 2-1. 

The Pillari brothers put Hood on the board at the start of the 19th minute. Christiano sent a free kick in from 30 yards and Juliano headed it into the left side for a 1-0 lead. It was Juliano's seventh career score and the fifth career assist for Christiano.

Both teams scored in the final 77 seconds of the half. Late in the 44th minute, Luke Staley got out on a breakaway and beat the goalkeeper one-on-one into the right side. The freshman's first career goal extended Hood's lead to two. 

Drew cut the lead in half less than 30 seconds later. Early in the 45th minute, Zach Lipshitz scored from 23 yards out off an assist from Max Correa. 

The Rangers had a chance to tie the game early in the second half. At the start of the 62nd minute, Kyle Bulgarelli made a team save for Hood when he cleared a shot by Dylan Hammer. 

Two goalkeepers split time for the Blazers. Stephen Friend made his first career start and stopped one shot in the first half. Danny Castillo made his collegiate debut in the second half and was credited with two stops. 

John Marques had five saves for Drew. 

Hood takes on FDU-Florham on September 4 in the Drew Fall Festival at 3 p.m.
