Women's basketball falls on senior day

FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College women's basketball team fell to the visiting Pride of Widener 78-67 on Senior Day in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth play.

Inside the Box Score
  • Lauren Keeney scored a team-high 17 points, including a 4-of-6 afternoon from 3-point range.
  • Mia Savoy recorded 14 points and seven rebounds.
  • Marlise Newson dished out five assists and added six points and one steal.
How it Happened
  • Widener got started early, leading Hood by five in the first minute and a half of play. A jumper by Celestria Hill with 8:24 on the clock got the Blazers on the board, trailing 5-2. In the last seven minutes of the quarter, the Pride went on a 15-6 run to lead the Blazers 22-9 at the end of the first.
  • The Blazers fought back hard in the second quarter, starting off with a 14-6 run and bringing the deficit down to a mere five points (28-23). Erin Phelan hit a jumper with 5:51 left in the quarter. Morgan Anderson answered back with a quick layup to make it 30-25 in favor of Widener. After trailing for the entire first half, the Blazers went on a 8-3 run in the last three minutes of play which was capped off by a 3-point shot from Keeney in the last 22 seconds to tie the score at 39 going into halftime.
  • Widener came out strong after the half with a 18-9 run in the first six and a half minutes of play. A 3-point shot from Devan Rimmer with 3:30 left in the quarter gave the Pride the lead 57-48. A 6-0 run from the Blazers brought them within three, trailing 57-54 at the end of the third.
  • Despite shooting 6-of-13 in the final 10 minutes, Widener outscored the Blazers 21-13 down the stretch to pull away. 
Analysis
  • Hood's bench outscored Widener's 34-17 in the game.
  • The Blazers shot 69 percent from the free throw line while the Pride shot 56 percent from the foul line.
For the opposition
  • Rimmer led all players with 27 points on the afternoon. She also added four rebounds and two steals.
  • Kyra Schenk turned in a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
