Pitching, baserunning key sweep of CCNY

FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College baseball team put up double-digit runs in the opener, then shutout the City College of New York in game two to sweep the doubleheader 14-2 and 4-0.

On the Mound
  • Ryan D'Allesandro, Jack Sullivan and Joe Alexander combined to pitch a two-hit shutout in the second game. D'Allesandro struck out five in five innings and Sullivan and Alexander each struck out two in scoreless innings. They combined to retire the final 14 Beaver batters.
  • Jake Howell picked up the win in the opener, pitching four innings of two-run baseball. He struck out five and walked just two to go with four hits allowed.
At the Plate
  • Hood stole a total of 18 bases between the two contests. Daniel Shepherd stole four, including three in the second game. Brad Sawyer swiped three total bases, taking a pair of bases in the first game.
  • Trent Copenhaver and Dylan Beck had two hits apiece in the first game. Shepherd had two hits in the second game.
Hood 14, CCNY 2
  • The Blazers scored in every inning, scoring 14 runs on only eight hits.
  • Hood drew eight walks and had three batters hit by pitches, to go along with five errors by CCNY. The Blazers also took advantage of nine stolen bases and four sacrifice flies.
  • In the first, Shepherd reached on an error and Sawyer was hit by a pitch before two executed a double-steal. The two scored on a two-run single by Copenhaver.
  • The Blazers added four more the following inning, including sac flies by Andrew Wenner and Shepherd before an RBI triple by Sawyer. After Jordan Patterson walked, Sawyer scored on a double-steal for a 6-0 lead.
  • James DeProspero walked to lead off the third, then stole second and third. The next three batters all walked, bring DeProspero home on a bases loaded walk by Shepherd.
  • CCNY executed a double-steal that included home during the fourth as the Beavers cut the lead to 7-2 after an RBI groundout and Parker Stemkowski's and Hamley Volquez's double-steal.
  • After Hood made it 8-2 in the bottom of the fourth, two more runs scored in the fifth. Dylan Beck had an RBI double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Schopf for a 10-2 advantage.
  • In the sixth, Andrew Perkins had a bases-loaded triple and scored on a sac fly from Beck to make it 14-2.
  • Beck went 2-for-2 with a walk, a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Copenhaver was 2-for-3 and drove in two, while Nick Rampone walked twice. Sawyer, DeProspero, Kroeger and Perkins each scored twice.
  • After Howell went four innings, David Dinges, Gabriel Gilger and Brennan Lyons each pitched hitless innings of relief.
Hood 4, CCNY 0
  • The Blazers scored once in the first and three times in the second and the pitching staff did the rest to pick up the sweep.
  • Rampone led off the bottom of the first with an infield single and advanced to second on a wild throw. He later scored on a wild pitch.
  • In the second, Beck drove in Kroeger with a sacrifice fly and Shepherd added a two-run double for a 4-0 lead.
  • After D'Allesandro allowed Ethan Angress to lead off the third with a single, Hood would not allow another baserunner. Angress was erased on an unusual play later in the inning. When Jaquez struck out as Angress attempted to steal, Jaquez thought the ball got away and raced to first. Angress successfully stole second but misinterpreted the ruling when Jaquez was called out immediately and began to head back to first. Hood then caught him in a rundown.
  • Shepherd had two hits and three RBIs.
Notes
  • Hood improved to 4-2 after the sweep.
  • CCNY dropped to 1-5.
