Wenner homers in win over Cabrini

FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College baseball team defeated visiting Cabrini 5-2 in non-conference action.

At the Plate On the Mound
  • Jake Howell allowed just one hit and a walk over three scoreless innings, striking out four for the win.
  • Ryan D'Allesandro pitched the fourth, fifth and sixth and gave up one run on four hits and struck out two.
  • Des Grimes allowed a run over two hitless innings, walking three.
  • Jahlin Jean-Baptiste earned his first save of 2020, striking out one in a scoreless ninth.
How it Happened
  • Hood took advantage of two Cavalier errors in the first inning to take the lead. Daniel Shepherd reached on an error, moved to third on a wild pickoff throw and scored on a sacrifice fly by Sawyer.
  • In the third, another error opened the door for the Blazers to expand the lead. James DeProspero reached on an error to start the inning and later scored on a single by Joe Kroeger to make it 2-0.
  • Wenner crushed a solo shot to left in the fourth to put Hood on top 3-0.
  • Another error by Cabrini aided the Blazers the following inning. Sawyer led off with a single and Kroeger later reached on an error. After the duo executed a double steal, Copenhaver knocked in Sawyer for a four-run lead.
  • Single runs in the sixth and eighth for Cabrini cut Hood's lead in half. Brendan Van Belle's two-out single in the sixth knocked in Steven Priest to make it 4-1. Three straight batters walked to lead off the eighth, the first of which, JD Barrett, scored on a sacrifice fly by Mack McKisson. Grimes pitched out of the jam, inducing a 643 double play to end the inning.
  • Hood got a run back in the bottom of the eighth. Wenner led off with an infield single, stole second and moved to third on an error. DeProspero later brought him home with a base hit to left for a 5-2 lead.
For the Opponent
  • Hood's pitching staff limited the Cavaliers to five singles and four walks. Joe Aurite was the lone Cabrini batter with both a hit and a walk.
  • Jonathan Baker turned in a steady effort on the mound but was undone by five errors behind him. He allowed just one earned run in seven innings on nine hits and two walks. Drew Swire gave up a run on three hits in the eighth.
Notes
  • The Blazers improve to 5-3 on the year, while the Cavaliers drop to 5-6.
