Split for women's volleyball in tri-match at Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Hood College women's volleyball team defeated Ferrum College 3-1 and fell to host Shenandoah 3-2 in a tri-match on the final day of the season.

Set Scores
  • The Blazers defeated the Panthers 25-21, 25-13, 23-25, 25-21. 
  • The Hornets won 25-18, 21-25, 19-25, 26-24, 15-8. 
Inside the Box Scores
  • Caitlin Ambruster totaled 42 kills over the two matches to go along with 46 digs. She had 24 kills against the Hornets and had 24 digs against Ferrum. 
  • Carrington Fray finished with 25 total kills, including 14 against Shenandoah. 
  • Jackie Malitzki dished out 77 assists over the tri-match.
  • Walissa Jaque ended the day with eight blocks, two more than Shane Simms. 
  • Robyn Reus had 41 total digs. Samantha Baker led Hood with 25 digs against the Hornets and finished with 40. Emma Elizondo added 38 digs. 
Ferrum 3, Hood 1
  • Ferrum jumped out to a 15-8 lead in the first set, but Hood answered with an 11-2 surge to take a 19-17 lead. The Panthers regrouped to tie the score at 21-21 before back-to-back kills by Ambruster swung the momentum back to Hood. 
  • Ambruster had three consecutive kills in the second set during a nine-point run that turned a one-point lead into a 19-9 advantage. 
  • In the third set, Hood went ahead 13-5. The Panthers responded with a 15-3 run to go up 20-16. The Blazers erased the deficit later with four straight points and an ace by Emma Elizondo tied it at 23-23 before Ferrum scored twice to force a fourth set.
  • Ambruster had three kills and a block during a stretch that turned a 5-4 deficit into 15-7 lead in the fourth set. The Panthers battled back to within two three times before Hood closed out the set and the match. 
  • Anna Rymer had 10 kills for Ferrum, and Arielle Tritt added 30 assists. 
Shenandoah 3, Hood 2
  • The Hornets took a 12-5 lead in the first set, but Hood immediately scored four straight points to make it 12-9. The Blazers eventually pulled within 20-18 on a kill by MacKenzi Wright before Shenandoah reeled off five points in a row to take the set. 
  • After Hood struggled hitting in the first set, Shenandoah had 10 kills and 10 errors in the second set. The teams traded leads early in the set but a 5-0 run by Hood gave the Blazers an 18-14 advantage and they went on to tie the match at 1-1.
  • Ray had three early kills in the third set and Ambruster had eight total as the Blazers slowly pulled away to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
  • Hood led 20-16 in the fourth set after a kill by Ambruster but a 10-4 run to finish the set gave the Hornets the win, forcing a decisive fifth set.
  • Ray notched a kill to pull the Blazers with 9-8 in the fifth set, but the Hornets scored the final six points to take the match.
  • Kate Poppo led Shenandoah with 20 kills and Brooke Wagner added 35 digs.
Notes
  • Hood's 116 digs against Shenandoah and 93 against Ferrum were its second and fourth most this season. 
  • The Blazers had 53 kills against the Panthers, their second best total this year.
