Women's volleyball pushes LVC to five sets

Box Score ANNVILLE, Pa. - Hood College overcame an icy start to win the third and fourth sets before Lebanon Valley escaped with a 3-2 win over the Blazers in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth women's volleyball.

  • LVC won 25-16, 25-13, 23-25, 14-25, 15-8. 
Inside the Box Score LVC 25, Hood 16
  • The first set featured 16 ties and lead changes, including a service ace by Katie Amaguana that tied the score at 14-14. 
  • From there, the Dutchmen embarked on an 11-2 run. The Blazers' attack game struggled during the run, as LVC gained four points down the stretch on attack errors. 
LVC 25, Hood 13
  • Hood continued its hitting woes in the second set, matching its 10 errors from the first set. 
  • LVC, meanwhile, rolled behind 13 kills and a single error, hitting .444 in the set. 
  • The disparity allowed the Dutchmen to slowly pull away over the course with their biggest lead coming on the set's final point. 
Hood 25, LVC 23
  • After committing 10 hitting errors in each of the first two sets, the Blazers committed just a total of nine over the final three sets. 
  • LVC took an early 8-4 lead, but the Blazers rallied with seven straight points to take the lead, starting with a kill by libero Robyn Reus. Ambruster added both of her service aces in the rally. 
  • The Dutchmen immediately went on a run of their own, turning an 11-8 Hood lead into a 16-12 LVC advantage. 
  • Hood still trailed 23-21 but back-to-back kills by Emma Elizondo and Walissa Jaque tied the score and forced Lebanon Valley to call a timeout. When play resumed, a kill by Barger and an ace from Elizondo made it a 2-1 match. 
Hood 25, LVC 14
  • Hood led 9-7 but a 12-2 run from there built the lead to 21-9. 
  • The Blazers found their groove, finishing the set with 14 kills and just two errors (.364). Ambruster had five of her 10 kills in the fourth set. 
LVC 15, Hood 8
  • Hood's momentum carried over to the beginning of the fifth set. Ray had three kills during a 7-4 start.
  • Reily Shelly led the way as LVC reclaimed the momentum, notching four kills in an 11-1 run to give the Dutchmen the win. 
For the Opponent
  • Shelly led all players with 20 kills and Mikiah Sangrey added 14 against two kills. 
  • Ali Whitmore dished out 42 assists and Kasey Thomas had 27 digs. 
Notes
  • Hood is 3-10 overall and 0-3 in the MAC Commonwealth, while LVC improved to 8-6 and 2-2. 
  • It was the first time in program history that the Blazers won sets against the Dutchmen.
