Fifth-inning comeback secured game two win over Alvernia University

FREDERICK, Md. – Four extra base hits in the fifth inning in game two lifted Hood College to a 4-2 win to salvage the split against Alvernia. The Golden Wolves defeated the Blazers 4-1 in the season-opening doubleheader for both teams. 

On the Mound
  • In game one, Jordan Patterson started and took the loss. He allowed seven hits and four earned runs, striking out five in 4.2 innings. Scott Ash tallied five strikeouts and no hits in 2.1 innings. 
  • Jahlin Jean-Baptiste picked up the win in relief in game two, pitching 3.1 innings of one-hit baseball, striking out five. Ryan D'Allesandro started the game, pitching 3.2 innings and giving up two earned runs on four hits and four strikeouts.  
At the Plate
  • Andrew Wenner and Stephen Sommer each finished the doubleheader with three hits. Both players doubled, as did Nick Rampone and Patterson. Patterson and Rampone both had two hits on the afternoon.  
Alvernia 4, Hood 1
  • The bats were quiet for the first four innings until the Golden Wolves woke up in the fifth. Billy Dougar flew out and grabbed the first run of the game while Nick Nutile doubled which scored two. TJ McNeeley singled to add on an insurance run at the end of the inning.
  • The Blazers plated their lone run in the bottom of the seventh when Matt Schopf was hit by a pitch and later scored on a throwing error.  
  • Shane Ostrowsky earned the win in five innings, allowing one hit and two walks. He struck out three. 
  • Patterson and Ash combined to fan 10 Golden Wolves. 
  • Nutile had two hits and two runs batted in for AU. 
Hood 4, Alvernia 2
  • Rampone led the bottom of the first off with a single and came around to score on a Wenner single to rightfield for a 1-0 lead.
  • Alvernia responded in the third inning when they scored off a single by Nutile. The Golden Wolves took the lead in the fourth inning when Nutile singled again, driving in one for a 2-1 lead.
  • Hood took the lead on a comeback with a three-run fifth inning. DeGirolamo started things off by singling to centerfield. With one out and DeGirolamo on third, Patterson crushed an RBI triple. Back-to-back doubles from Wenner and Sommer scored one run each, giving the Blazers the 4-2 lead.
  • Jean-Baptiste picked up the win after pitching 3.1 shutout innings to end the game.
  • Brian Kane took the loss, allowing four earned runs in five innings. He struck out seven. 
  • Nutile had his second two-hit, two-RBI game. 
Notes
  • The Blazers and Golden Wolves are both 1-1 on the season.
  • The four-game series on March 6-7 will count as non-conference contests.
