FREDERICK, Md. - A seven-run fifth inning in game two allowed for the Hood softball team to defeat Stevenson 9-2, splitting their home-opener doubleheader. The Mustangs overcame the Blazers in game one with a score of 13-2 after five innings.
At the Plate
- Belle Bortner went 4-for-7 on the afternoon, recording four RBIs and one run.
- Caitlin Gosline went 3-for-3 in the second game with one run and drove in one.
- Cailyn Barthlow had a double in the second game, scoring one run and earning two RBIs.
Inside the Circle
- Bortner started and took the loss in game one, allowing five earned runs in 2.2 innings.
- Jordan Long threw a complete second game, striking out two and allowing just nine hits and two earned runs.
Stevenson 13, Hood 2 (5 Innings)
- Bortner's RBI single to center field gave the Blazers an early lead in the first inning.
- An RBI single by Sierra Stark in the second inning set up a two-run home run by Megan Hamp, giving the Mustangs a 2-1 lead in the second inning.Â
- Marissa Heuer's RBI single to center field was the catalyst for what would be a eight-run third inning, allowing for Stevenson to lead 11-1.
- Bortner reached on an error in the bottom of the third, allowing for Anna Schipske to score from third base and make the score to 11-2.
- Stevenson's Maddie Bosley rounded out the scoring for the Mustangs when her two-run single brought the score to 13-2 in the top of the fourth inning.
Stevenson 2, Hood 9
- Bortner started off the scoring for the Blazers once more with an RBI single to center field in the bottom of the first inning.
- Stevenson answered back with an RBI triple by Bosley. She then scored on a groundout to shortstop, allowing for the Mustangs to lead 2-1 in the top of the third inning.Â
- The Blazers opened the flood gates in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring seven runs off of singles from Bortner, Mallorie Hetzel, Brandi Davidson, Long and Ellee Romie. Barthlow reached on an error, allowing for Long to score. Gosline rounded out the scoring for Hood with an RBI single to center field, extending the final score to 9-2.
Notes
- Hood improves to 1-3 on the season while Stevenson is 3-1.
