YORK, Pa. - The Hood College baseball team dropped both ends of a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth doubleheader at first-place York (Pa.) by a total of three runs, falling 3-2 and 14-12.
Inside the Box Score
- James DeProspero hit a grand slam and Andrew Wenner also homered for the Blazers. Wenner finished the doubleheader 4-for-7 with four runs scored and three runs batted in.
- Chris Nalley went 4-for-7 with a three-hit game in the nightcap with a triple. The first-year student drove in two runs in each game.
On the Mound
- Jahlin Jean-Baptiste made his first career start in the opener. He went five innings, allowing three runs on six hits and four walks. He struck out five and took the loss. James Walsh pitched a scoreless sixth, striking out one.
- Jordan Patterson started the second game but did not factor into the decision. He struck out six and walked only one in four innings, allowing three runs on four hits. Six relievers combined to finish the game. Scott Ash struck out two and walked one in the fifth.
York 3, Hood 2
- Joe Capobianco had an RBI double in the first and Jayden Cowan followed suit in the fourth. In between, Luke Turner hit a solo home run in the second as the Spartans took a 3-0 lead.
- The Blazers got their lead off hitter on base in the first, second and fifth innings before finally breaking through in the sixth. Mikaili Robertson led off the inning with a walk. Wenner followed with a single before the runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. After the next two batters struck out, Nalley ripped a two-run double down the line in right field to bring Hood within a run. Nalley stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch but Brandon Haggerty picked up his third strike out of the inning to keep York in front. Conor Miller then pitched a 1-2-3 seventh for the save.
- Wenner had two hits for Hood and Cowan did likewise for the Spartans.
- Haggerty struck out nine in six innings for the win.
York 14, Hood 12
- The Blazers started things off on the right foot in game two with three runs in the first. Stephen Sommer doubled with one out and a single by Patterson put runners on the corners. Wenner gave Hood a 3-0 lead with the team's first homer of the year, a drive over the fence in left field.
- Austin Denlinger hit a solo home run in the bottom of the inning and after a run scored on a wild pitch in the second, a solo shot by Jack Barry tied the game in the third.
- Nalley's two-run triple in the fifth drove in Sommer and Patterson to give the Blazers a 5-3 lead.
- York took its first lead in the sixth, scoring four times on just two hits for a 7-5 advantage as the teams traded multi-run innings.
- Hood scored three times with two outs in the seventh. Wenner was hit by a pitch and Nalley singled with both runners scoring on a triple to right off the bat of Alex Jenkins. Jenkins scored on an RBI single by Joe Monteleone for an 8-7 lead.
- The lead was short lived, however, as the Spartans tied the game in the bottom of the inning and took the lead in the eighth. York scored six runs in the eighth, including a three-run homer by Capobianco and a two-run shot by Brandon White to make it 14-8.
- Hood rallied in the top of the ninth. Wenner singled with one out and Nalley was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. With two outs, Monteleone was hit by a pitch to load the bases and DeProspero followed with his first career home run, a grand slam to left field, which pulled the Blazers within 14-12.
- Miller came in out of the bullpen for the final out to record his second save of the day.
- Sommer and Nalley had three hits apiece for Hood. Wenner scored three times and knocked in three.
- Six different Spartans recorded two hits.
Notes
- Hood fell to 4-12 overall and 2-8 in the MAC Commonwealth.
- York improved to 16-2 overall and 12-2.
