FREDERICK, Md. - For the second time this season, Hood College's
Cailyn Barthlow tied the school record for hits in a game with four, but the softball team fell to York (Pa.) 5-3 and 9-2 in a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth doubleheader.
Before the games, Hood honored its lone senior,
Caitlin Gosline for her contributions to the program.
At the Plate
- Barthlow doubled in the opener before erupting for a four-hit game in the nightcap. She finished 5-for-8 with two doubles and two runs scored. She became the first player since Casey Dunn in 2013 with two four-hit games in the same season.
- Belle Bortner had two hits in the opener and Angela Acampora added two in the nightcap.
- Gosline had hits in both games.
Inside the Circle
- Bortner went the distance, but took the loss in game one. She allowed five runs on 11 hits and a walk, striking out three.
- In game two, Jordan Long gave up eight runs, five earned, in 5.1 innings. She allowed 10 hits. Lindsay Wilson finished the game in relief, allowing an unearned run on a hit and walk.
York (Pa.) 5, Hood 3
- The Blazers scored three times in the first inning to take the early lead. Gosline led off the game with a single and moved to third on Barthlow's double. With one out, York threw the ball away on a slow roller by Acampora, allowing both runners to score for a two-run edge. Mallorie Hetzel and Borter followed with singles to load the bases. An RBI fielder's choice by Wilson stretched the lead to three before the end of the inning.
- The Spartans scored once in the third and again in the fifth taking the lead in the sixth. Daphney Adams had an RBI triple and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Ellie Meyer helped her own cause in the seventh, walking and scoring an insurance run later in the inning.
- Meyer went 3-for-4 hitting and pitched a complete game for the Spartans.
York (Pa.) 9, Hood 2
- A five-run fifth broke open a tie game and gave the Spartans the sweep.
- Adams gave York an early lead with an RBI double in the top of the first but Hood quickly erased the deficit. Barthlow doubled and Davidson was hit by a pitch. Acampora drove in Barthlow to tie the game on a double to right field. An RBI groundout by Mallorie Hetzel knocked in Davidson to make it 2-1.
- After the Spartans tied the game in the fourth, they took the lead for good in the fifth. Adams had the big hit in the five-run inning with a two run single as YCP took a 7-2 lead.
- Alyssa Harhigh put the game out of reach in the sixth with a two-run double.
- Adams went 3-for-4 for the Spartans. Hannah Vogt pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on nine hits and striking out five.
