Baseball yields to Messiah

FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College baseball team dropped both ends of a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth doubleheader to Messiah 7-6 in eight innings and 8-2. 

At the Plate
  • Stephen Sommer went 5-for-8 over the course of the doubleheader. He added a double and a sacrifice fly to his day. 
On the Mound
  • Jake Howell started game one and allowed three earned runs in four innings. He gave up four hits and a walk, striking out five. Gabriel Gilger struck out the side in the seventh. Jahlin Jean-Baptiste took the loss, allowing a run in the top of the eighth. 
  • Hood used seven pitchers in the second game. Jacob Cutter started and took the loss, allowing four earned runs. Dylan Jaquez pitched a scoreless third. Cole Whitton struck out two and did not allow a run in the fifth. James Walsh tossed a perfect seventh, striking out two. 
Messiah 7, Hood 6 (8 innings)
  • Hood tied the game with a four-run seventh, but Kasey Caras hit a home run in the top of the eighth to give the Falcons the win. 
  • The Blazers trailed 6-2 heading into the seventh. Sam Wheeler pinch hit and led off with a single. After Mikaili Robertson was hit by a pitch, Sommer doubled in both runners to make it 6-4. Nick Rampone followed with single to put runners on the corners. Back-to-back, one-out walks to Chris Nalley and Joe Monteleone brought in another run to make it 6-5. Andrew Perkins drove in the tying run with single up the middle that knocked in Nalley for a 6-6 score. 
  • Caras led off the eighth with a home run for what proved to be the winning run. 
  • Sommer went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. 
  • Patterson walked and was hit by a pitch. 
  • Nalley singled and walked twice. 
  • Caras went 2-for-3 with two RBIs
  • Josh Nielsen picked up the win in relief for the Falcons, while Trent Culver notched the save. 
Messiah 8, Hood 2
  • A five-run first inning gave Messiah the lead for good. Sam Zercher had the big hit in the inning with a two-run double. 
  • The Falcons added single runs in the second, fourth and sixth innings to stretch the lead to 8-0. 
  • Hood got on the board in the seventh with a pair of runs. Monteleone led off with a walk and James DeProspero followed with a single. Monteleone later scored on a wild pitch and Jacob Saylor came on on an error by Messiah. 
  • Caras had three hits for the Falcons, including a home run in the second. 
  • Sommer had two hits for Hood. 
  • Josh Monturo pitched a complete game for the win. He allowed five hits, two runs and three walks in seven innings. He struck out eight. 
Notes
  • Scheduled to be a seven-inning game followed by a nine-inning contest, since the first game went into extra innings, MAC rules for 2021 dictated the second game revert to a seven-inning affair. 
  • Hood is 4-8 overall and 2-4 in the MAC Commonwealth. 
  • Messiah moved to 6-9-1 and 4-9-1.
