FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Hood College baseball fell twice against Methodist University 13-7 and 14-4 in the Blazers' season opening doubleheader.
At the Plate
On the Mound
- Kevin Nelson, Jr. got the start for game one. He went three innings, allowing four runs on three hits and five walks. He struck out one and took the loss. Frank Spaide, Hood's third pitcher of the game, pitched a scoreless eighth, striking out one.
- Joe Alexander started the second game and would struggle only throwing an inning and a third. The junior allowed 10 runs on four hits and six walks. He struck out two and took the loss. Four relievers combined to finish the game, including Colby Childs and Ryan McCreedy, who each pitched a hitless inning.
Methodist 13, Hood 7
- Jacob Austin hit a solo home run in the first inning to start the scoring off for the Monarchs. Nelson, Jr. got out of a bases loaded jam with a fly out by Josh Lallo to leave the score at 1-0 in the first.
- Nick Rampone led off the second inning with a single to left field.He stole second and scored on a base hit by Andrew Perkins. The score after two innings would be deadlocked at 1 run each, after a scoreless bottom half of the inning by Nelson, Jr.
- Methodist regained the lead in the third, scoring three runs on a Wesley Hall double and a Spencer Nelson two-run homer to give the Monarchs a 4-1 lead heading into the fourth inning.
- After a one-run inning by the Monarchs in the fourth, the Blazers cut the lead to four on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch by AJ Haines to score Jacob Saylor from third.
- Methodist broke the game open in the bottom half of the fifth, scoring five runs on five hits to put the Monarchs ahead 10-2.
- Nelson hit his second two-run home run in the sixth to put Methodist ahead even further. Justin Blunt added to the Monarchs lead on a wild pitch by Luke Walker to make the score 13-2.
- Hood tried to mount a comeback in the eighth inning scoring four runs on three hits. Cristian Reyna doubled, scoring Sommer. Two bases loaded walks followed as the Blazers cut the deficit to 13-6.
- Keegan Brennan knocked in the final run for Hood in the ninth with an RBI single to end the game at a score of 13-7.
- Kyle Molivas pitched two scoreless innings, only allowing one walk to get the win.
- Spencer Nelson led Methodist two home runs and four RBIs.
Methodist 14, Hood 4
- The Monarchs broke out the scoring early in game two with a two-run homer by Rob Wilkerson in the first inning to give Methodist a 2-0 lead.
- An eight-run second inning proved costly for the Blazers, catapulting the lead to 10-0.
- The Blazers responded in the top of the third when Sam Wheeler grounded into double-play, scoring Sommer to put Hood on the board 10-1.
- Methodist's Nelson hit his third home run of the afternoon in the third with a solo shot.
- Hood added two more runs in the fourth on an RBI base hit by Sommer and a sacrifice fly by Wheeler to pull within 10-3.
- Methodist added a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Jacob Austin, extending the lead to 11-3.
- The Monarchs finished the scoring with a two-run sixth.
- Austin Skipper threw three innings, only allowing one run and striking out one to get the win for the Monarchs.
- Spencer Nelson led Methodist with a home run, a double totalling three RBIs.

- Hood falls to 0-2 to start the 2022 campaign.
- Methodist starts on the season 2-0.
