FREDERICK, Md. - Despite a career-high 22 points by
Christopher Smalls (Washington, D.C./St. Andrew's Episcopal), the Hood College men's basketball team fell to visiting York (Pa.) 68-65 in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth play at the Volpe Athletic Center.
Inside the Box Score
- Smalls hit 8-for-10 overall and went 4-for-6 from 3-point range.
- Soren Almquist (Oakton, Va./James Madison) hit three 3-pointers off the bench on his way to 13 points.
- Garrison Linton (New Market, Md./Oakdale) scored all 11 of his points in the first half and finished 4-for-8 shooting.
- Ryan Hollwedel (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) was also 4-for-8 from the field and ended the evening with 10 points.
- Jack Fricka (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) and Linton each had seven rebounds, while Linton added four assists.
How it Happened
- Hood led by two before going on an 8-2 run late in the first half that stretched the advantage to 34-26. Hollwedel and Strickland accounted for all eight points in the run before a bucket at the buzzer by Jayden Rowe made it 34-28 at halftime.
- The Spartans scored the first 10 points of the second half to claim a 38-34 lead after a 3-pointer by Sean Kelly with 17:33 left.
- Smalls scored five straight points three minutes later as Hood reclaimed the lead 42-40.
- York tied the score and took the lead on a 3-point field goal by Mascari before Smalls sank another 3-pointer to tie the score at 45-45 at 12:53.
- A 3-pointer by Chris Miers was answered by one from Almquist to lock the teams at 48-48 just 40 seconds later. Miers connected on another shot from behind the arc with 11:58 left to give York the lead for good.
- The Spartans built a 58-50 lead with 8:36 on the clock but two free throws and a 3-pointer by Smalls cut the deficit to three at 7:04.
- Hood trailed just 64-63 after Will Pataki (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) hit two foul shots and Smalls scored with 33 seconds left.
- The Blazers cut it to one again, 66-65, with seven seconds to play on a bucket by Smalls. After Rowe was fouled and hit two both free throws. A last second heave by Hollwedel was off the mark.
For the Opponent
- York was led by the duo of Jackson Mascari and Chris Miers, who scored 15 points apiece.
- Kai Cipalla led the Spartans with six rebounds.
Analysis
- After a strong first half shooting, the Blazers connected on just 36 percent in the second half, allowing the Spartans to offset Hood's 15-6 advantage in points off turnovers.
- York outrebounded Hood 35-24.
Notes
- Hood fell to 9-8 overall and 3-5 overall. York improved to 8-9 and 2-6.
