Women’s ice hockey thwarted by Flying Dutchmen

HERSHEY, Pa. - The Hood College women's ice hockey team could not even the season series against Middle Atlantic Conference foe Lebanon Valley College, as the Blazers fell 4-1 on the road.

Inside the Box Score
Hayley Turnbull (Tantallon, NS, CA/Mount Academy) made 49 saves on the evening.

Sofie Ancona (Grosse Point Farms, Mi./University Liggett) scored the Blazers' lone goal.

How it Happened
Both teams spent the majority of the first period trying to find a way to get good scoring chances, as there were a combined four shots on goal through the first 10 minutes of play. LVC managed to find offensive zone time shortly after though, peppering shots on goal or just around it.

A long defensive shift for Hood eventually cost them, as they would be called for a hooking penalty and allow the Flying Dutchmen even more offensive chances, which they would capitalize on less than 40 seconds into the man advantage. Although LVC would continue to stay in the offensive zone for most of the rest of the period, Turnbull kept their deficit to just 1-0 after 20 minutes.

Hood began battling back in the second period, putting up more shots on goal and keeping pace with the Flying Dutchmen, but another penalty just six minutes into the period stopped any momentum, especially after LVC scored on the ensuing power play to double their lead.

Although the Blazers did not concede on their next penalty kill, the fatigue of that amount of defense showed shortly after, as Maeghan Howson got a shot past Turnbull to give the Flying Dutchmen a 3-0 lead.
There was certainly no quit with Hood though, as just a minute later, Ancona found herself alone on a scoring chance and would not let her team get shut out two games in a row, getting the Blazers on the board and cutting their deficit to 3-1. A Hood power play 30 seconds later looked like it would give the visiting team even more momentum with a chance to get within one, but LVC would get a second short-handed goal in as many games to go back up by three and cap off a wild period.

The Blazers came out for the third period with energy, taking advantage of an early power play to bombard the goal with shots, but none were able to find the net, and the Flying Dutchmen would not allow anything else to cross the line before the buzzer sounded to end the game 4-1 in favor of LVC.

For the Opponent
Howson ended the night with two goals.

Lacy Bigelow made 13 saves in the win.
