FREDERICK, Md. – A
Jonathan Fuentes (Hagerstown, Md./Oakdale) goal with less than three minutes in the match broke the scoreless tie and propelled the Hood College men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over McDaniel College with honored faculty and staff in attendance.
Inside the Box Score
Fuentes' goal was the only one in the match.
Lucas Godfroy (Adamstown, Md./Urbana) assisted on the tally.
Adam Labows (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) made one save for a second consecutive shutout.
How it Happened
Neither team could find anything offensively in the first half, as the first 45 minutes ended with zero shots on target from either squad.
As the second half began and got going, it looked like it would be another period of midfield play with hardly any chances, but the McDaniel managed to keep pressure on Hood in an attempt to force a mistake. That mistake would come in the 70th minute when a misplay gave Kristerson Mitchell a scoring chance, but Labows had come out quickly and gave Mitchell nowhere to shoot but right into him.
After some more back and forth in the midfield, it felt like the game was destined to end in a scoreless draw, but a loose ball found the feet of Godfroy on the wing who sent a beautiful cross into the middle of the box that found the foot of Fuentes, who poked it behind keeper Tate Roth into the back of the net for the game-winning goal.
