Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey | | Joel White, Graduate Assistant

Women’s ice hockey forces tie against Mustangs, loses shootout

REISTERSTOWN, Md. – A goal from Ella Phillips (Midlothian, Va./North American Hockey Academy) with just 1:17 left in regulation tied the game 3-3 and forced an overtime period, but the Hood College women's ice hockey team could not complete the comeback in extra time, falling 1-0 in the shootout to Middle Atlantic Conference rival Stevenson.

Inside the Box Score
Phillips scored two goals for the Blazers

Mia Cheesebrough (Mendota Heights, Mn./Two Rivers/St. Paul Riveters) finished with a goal and an assist.

Sofie Ancona (Grosse Point Farms, Mi./Saint Clair Shores Saints) and Emily Cross (Bryantown, Md./Tri-City Eagles) both got a point for an assist.

Kamryn Sohner (Hilliard, Oh./Dallas Stars Elite AAA) made 16 saves before being replaced by Maggie Grijalva (Fullerton, Ca./Anaheim Lady Ducks AAA), who stopped 16 shots of her own.

How it Happened
Hood got an early power play when Stevenson was called for roughing but only managed one shot with the advantage. The Mustangs then flipped the script and began peppering shots toward the net, especially after earning a power play of their own. Sohner was up to task though, stopping all shots she faced in a three-minute span. Each team managed to get one more good offensive rush, but nothing found the back of the net before the first intermission.

Although the Blazers won the opening faceoff of the second period, Stevenson quickly regained possession and caused chaos in front of Sohner, eventually finding the puck loose in front of the net and slotting it home to put Hood down 1-0. Despite the Blazers getting three more power plays in the next 10 minutes, they remained down a goal, and a battle at Sohner's goal post shortly after the third penalty expired saw another tally for the Mustangs. This made it a 2-0 game in favor of the home team and cause coach Josh Funk to spell Sohner and put Grijalva in after the latter started the first two games against Arcadia.

Grijalva was tested shortly after entering the game with five shots in 1:31, but kept her team's deficit to just two. Shortly after the end of a power play with the offending Stevenson player still coming out of the box, Ancona found Cheesebrough in the slot with the net wide open to cut the deficit in half with just three seconds left in the period.

Coming out into the third period it was clear Hood had momentum, getting the first shots on goal of the period and drawing another power play. Although it was unable to score on it, a bouncing puck just a couple minutes later allowed Phillips to get past two Mustangs and put the puck in the back of the net to tie the game 2-2. That tie was short-lived though, as Stevenson was able to score again to regain its lead just 1:09 afterwards. Needing something in the final two minutes of play, Phillips was able to once again tie the game with a seeing eye shot from the point, sending the Blazers' bench into an uproar while silencing the home crowd as the game went to overtime.

A late penalty on the Mustangs gave Hood its seventh power play of the evening, but were again unable to capitalize, and with Stevenson having no luck with their offensive unit, it would come down to a shootout. After the first two skaters for both teams failed to score, Carleigh Barwick got her shot past Grijalva, and the final Blazer was stopped to give the Mustangs the extra point.
