FREDERICK, Md. – Hot hands turned into flamethrowers as both squads in the men's basketball game shot over 50-percent but the Blazers single game field goal percentage record of 64 percent and the duo of
Kullen Robinson (Alexandria, Va./Alexandria City) and
Jevon Yarbrough (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport) dropping 30-plus points took care of St. Vincent 111-98 at Woodsboro Bank Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Inside the Box Score
Robinson scored a career-high 31 points and went 11-for-15 from the field.
Yarbrough worked alongside to score 30 and dish six assists.
How it Happened
The crowd knew they had a high scoring outing on their hands when Yarbrough took the opening jump to the rack to score the game's first bucket within five seconds just to be answered by a Bearcats three pointer And 1 on the ensuing possession.
Gordon Maxwell of St. Vincent was the center of the offense and displayed multiple gadgets to be able to penetrate the middle of the defense only to kick it out and eventually find the open man at a high rate. The first seven of ten shots made for the visitors were way out in three-point land.
Spearheaded by Robinson, Hood has success finding the open space down low in the dispersed defense to get quick buckets. Packing in the offense up high and the shifting the bigs out of the way either gave the ball handler the opportunity to take it himself or deek the final defender to open up a cutting teammate. Hood went 13-of-14 from the field to start the game to combat.
The contact made from the top scorers turned into foul shots chipped away at the Bearcats, not only a successful bucket or a what was seen as a stop turned into the chance of points or extra points. Concentration at the basket earned their hay.
Garrett Cox (Glen Allen, VA/Glen Allen) had been quiet thus far this season but played his part on second chance opportunities to create yet another dimension of the offense that the defense had to depend on covering.
Both teams kept the heat on in the second half, but the deep shooting of St. Vincent cooled off and the 60 points in the paint for the Blazers for what has been seen as the #letitfly squad kept
Chad Dickman's alma mater off of his tail and into their sixth win of the season.
"We have an outstanding offensive team with very skilled guys, so that'll often keep you in games," said head coach
Chad Dickman. "So in a game like today's where the other team is knocking down shots at a high clip, you just got to outscore them. And we did just that."
Dickman also mentioned that allowing 98 points is a step back from where they want to be, but luckily the score was more of a nod to D.P. Harris' team as they are a good program and the Blazers escape and snag a win.
