Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey | | Joel White, Graduate Assistant

Women’s ice hockey bruised by Flying Dutchmen

HAGERSTOWN, Md. – The Hood College women's ice hockey team was unable to replicate its previous success against Middle Atlantic Conference opponent Lebanon Valley College, as the Blazers fell 4-3 at home.

Inside the Box Score
Ella Bynan (Park City, Ut./Team Colorado U19), Sofie Ancona (Grosse Point Farms, Mi./Saint Clair Shores Saints), and Olivia Sharkoski (Bradenton, Fl./Nashville Jr. Predators U19) all scored for Hood.

Renata Petrella (Cranberry Township, Pa./Nashville Jr. Predators U19) and Emily Cross (Bryantown, Md./Tri-City Eagles) were credited with an assist each.

Kamryn Sohner (Hilliard, Oh./Dallas Stars Elite AAA) made 34 saves in the loss.

How it Happened
It seemed the Flying Dutchmen wanted to flip the script around from the last game, as they scored just 1:25 into the game for the early lead. Exactly unlike the previous game, the Blazers wasted no time responding when Sharkoski tipped a shot towards the net over the shoulder of McKayla Romano to tie the game 1-1 just over four minutes later. Although Hood was unable to capitalize on its first power play of the night, a turnover in the slot perfectly setup Ancona to rifle a shot into the corner and give the
Blazers a 2-1 lead before the first intermission.

Hood would also start the second period with a two-player advantage due to a leftover penalty from the first and a roughing call after the horn blew at the end of the period but again failed to capitalize on the sloppy play from LVC. In fact, it would be the
Flying Dutchmen who turned the penalty kill into momentum, catching the defense lagging and tying things 2-2 just 3:34 into the second. A penalty on the Blazers allowed LVC to again turn up the pressure, but Sohner was up to task, stopping all seven shots she faced in the two-minute timespan.

The Flying Dutchmen would get two more power plays in the period, but again Hood's defense allowed nothing to go in the net and was able to make several goal line stops much to the chagrin of the LVC bench. When the Flying Dutchmen gave the Blazers yet another power play, it would be Bynan who finally capitalized on it, blowing past the defense and scoring from the side of the net to once again give Hood a one-goal lead. After a few more shots from LVC, the buzzer would sound with the Blazers holding onto a 3-2 lead with 20 minutes to play.

Both teams would play fairly evenly to start the third, but Hood would once again be given a power play, this time 6:40 in. Although it would not score, shortly after it ended the home team would be called for their own penalty, and the Flying Dutchmen would take advantage of the miscue and tie the game at 3-3.

LVC's next penalty gave the Blazers another chance to take the lead, this time late in the game, but nothing would come of the ensuing advantage. As time wound down, the Flying Dutchmen would take advantage of a non-call after a Hood player was tripped up and score their fourth goal of the game with 1:18 to play. Although the scoring player would be given their team's 8th penalty of the game, a 10-minute game misconduct penalty for taunting, there would be no power play for the Blazers, who would not find the equalizer with the goalie pulled and be dealt a 4-3 loss.

For the Opponent
Addison Taylert scored the game-winning goal.

Savannah Alexander made 25 saves in the win.
