Women’s Ice Hockey loses fight with Knights

FREDERICK, Md. - The Blazers accumulated 19 blocks on the night to keep Arcadia off the attack but that wasn't enough to hold off the Knights in the 4-1 loss on Friday night.

Inside the Box Score

Mia Cheesebrough (Mendota Heights, Mn./Two Rivers/St. Paul Riveters) scored the Blazers sole goal, her second of the season.

Dakota Ormiston (Scituate, Ma./Portsmouth Abbey) had five blocks on the night.

Maggie Grijalva (Fullerton, Ca./Anaheim Lady Ducks AAA) had 50 saves on the night.

How it Happened

A shot lofted over the head of Grijalva was knocked down by Arcadia's York and she was able to find space on the right side of Grijalva at point blank..

Ancona halfway through the first had a breakaway opportunity but her one-on-one attempt smothered by Arcadia's Szelag. One of many Ancona breakaways on the night.

The Blazers struggled to keep the opposition out of the attacking zone, with passes intercepted early and constant activity in the corners. The Knights pressed one side of the ice in transition leaving a defensemen in white to force the puck out of a tough window.

Grijalva made due with the situation seeing the puck well and letting shots feed into her biggest pads to make efficient saves.

With less than a minute remaining in the first, two Blazers moved up to cover the puck after a turnover but the Arcadia attacker found a cutting Torrey right in front of goal. Torrey made one more pass for Dee to hit the back door shot right behind Grijalva to extend the score 2-0.

Fast forward to the end of the second period where Sophie Ancona won a scrum for the puck at center ice with four Arcadia skaters on the chase to the attacking side.

Ancona would turn and find a trailing Cheesbrough and her shot would sneak under the outstretched goalie to put Hood on the board.

Analysis

Both teams walked away with no goals on the power play, 0-for-4 each.

The Blazers were outshot 54-13 on the night.
