FREDERICK, Md. – The men's soccer team clocked in on Labor Day and worked the Cougars of Chatham 3-1 at Thomas Athletic Field on Monday afternoon.
Inside the Box Score
Chino Delgado (Hyattsville, Md./Bladensburg) notches goal No. 3 on the season and his young career.
Jonah Erb (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) in his second start earns his first career win.
Zeth Zambrano (Austin, Tx./Barca Residency Academy) scores his first goal in a collegiate uniform.
How it Happened
From the jump, the Blazers were looking for the deep ball down the right to the connect.
James Knowlton (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) with the wheels received a chance at a cross.
Later though,
Cristian Topovich (Frederick, Md./Oakdale) would take a dribble just inside the endline and bought enough time to shoot right in front of the goal but a Cougar defender trying to clear found his own goal and put the Blazers up 1-0 in the own goal.
The Blazers would find their labor paying off again thanks to a quick start from a throw in from
Lucas Godfroy (Adamstown, Md./Urbana) and a little extra help to take the ball towards the middle of the attacking zone to find Delgado.
Delgado already with two goals this season, took two steps and stopped and popped a strike inside the post to put the Frederick herd up 2-0.
Chatham had an opportunity to take a big swing before half when a harsh touch by a Blazer midfielder broke open a rally, a purple jersey made it past the keeper but couldn't finish as his shot hit the side of goal.
The opposition would swing on the other side of the half and connect. A Cougar attacker broke free to take an attempt to score and his laser deflected off a Hood defender and rolled into goal to cut the lead.
Terrell Funchess (Taneytown, Md./Henry E. Lackey) and
Daniel Mercado (Silver Spring, Md./Wheaton) had physical slide tackles to dial down the momentum of the visitors.
Landon Norcross (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon) almost cashed in on the offensive end and his defensive effort negated a dangerous corner in 60'.
Zambrano showed signs in the previous game on his scoring skill but was combated heavily. However, after Mercado's cross rocketed off the hands of the Chatham goalie, Zambrano took the rebound from outside the box and found daylight between post and keeper with the Blazers now with their two-goal lead back.
Notes
The Blazers have scored nine goals thus far this season in two games, a mark that took the Blazers seven games in the year prior.
Hood filled the goal will attack as they edged Chatham 8-3 in shots on goal.
