Sohner shuts the door as women’s ice hockey neutralizes Hawks

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hood College women's ice hockey team's rematch of its first series as a program against Hilbert College kicked off this afternoon, with the Blazers picking up a 4-0 win on the road.

Inside the Box Score
Alyssa Wilson (Scottsdale, Az./Dallas Stars Elite AAA), Dakota Ormiston (Scituate, Ma./Portsmouth Abbey), Averi Reider (Red Lion, Pa./York Lady Devils U19), and Mia Cheesebrough (Mendota Heights, Mn./Two Rivers/St. Paul Riveters) all logged a goal, with Cheesebrough adding two assists to her stats sheet as well.

Sofie Ancona (Grosse Point Farms, Mi./Saint Clair Shores Saints) and Reece Gall (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Buffalo Regals U19) were each credited with an assist, and Ella Phillips (Midlothian, Va./North American Hockey Academy) had two helpers in the afternoon.

Kamryn Sohner (Hilliard, Oh./Dallas Stars Elite AAA) stopped all 26 shots she faced to earn her second career shutout.

How it Happened
Hood's offense started off hot, getting six shots on goal before Hilbert registered its first, but goalie Brook Thompson stopped everything she faced. A roughing penalty on the Hawks just over 10 minutes in gave the Blazers' offense a prime chance for the game's first goal, but they would only manage one shot on goal before it was killed off.

Not to be hampered too long though, Hood would get more good looks in the minutes after the penalty expired, and Wilson would collect her own shot's rebound and deflect the puck off a Hawk to put the Blazers on the board 1-0. Hood seemed to gain new life after the goal, not allowing a shot against Sohner but peppering Thompson on the other side. The Hilbert netminder stonewalled everything she saw, holding the Blazers to a one-goal lead after the first period.

Both teams would get solid chances for the first half of the second period, but shortly after a Hawks power play, Hood would get on the board again when a pass to Ormiston found her alone in the slot to double the Blazers' lead. Another long offensive zone possession from them would pay off a few minutes later, as a blocked shot fell to the stick of Reider in front of an open goal to make it a 3-0 advantage. Hood continued to put shots on goal, but there would be no more scoring as the teams prepared for the final 20 minutes of regulation.

The Blazers managed to kill off the remainder of a second period penalty to start the third, and after Sohner stopped three shots in less than 30 seconds, they managed to break out and return to the offensive zone. Thompson gave Hood no quarter though, stopping shot after shot to keep the comeback alive, but an empty-net goal to make it 4-0 with a minute remaining put any hopes of a comeback to rest.

For the Opponent
Thompson made 55 saves in the loss.

Analysis
The Blazers outshot the Hawks 59-26.

Hood went 0-3 on the power play, while Hilbert failed to convert any of its four advantages.

The Blazers had a 29-20 advantage in faceoffs.
