FREDERICK, Md. – A 2-on-1 just 15 seconds into overtime was the deciding factor in the Hood College women's ice hockey team's win over Framingham State University, with
Sofie Ancona (Grosse Point Farms, Mi./Saint Clair Shores Saints) cleaning up a rebound to give the Blazers a 4-3 overtime win in non-conference action.
Inside the Box Score
Ancona finished the game with two goals and two assists, going 7-8 in the faceoff circle.
Molly Hawkins (Perkasie, Pa/Jr. Flyers) scored two goals on the night.
Emily Cross (Bryantown, Md./Tri-City Eagles) was credited with two assists, including the overtime game-winner.
Kamryn Sohner (Hilliard, Oh./Dallas Stars Elite AAA) made 31 saves in the win.
How it Happened
Sohner was put to the test right away with back-to-back shots on goal less than 15 seconds into the game, but she fought them off to keep the game scoreless. The Rams continued to put on pressure at the start of the period, but the Blazers were able to get sustained pressure and swing the momentum to their side. Despite the good looks, they were unable to cash in on anything, and the two teams went into the first intermission scoreless.
Hood got a good chance to score with a power play just 13 seconds into the second period, but a penalty of their own shortly after negated a majority of it. Another Blazers' penalty just a couple minutes later put them on the back foot once again, but they allowed just one shot on goal for the two minute disadvantage. With just over 10 minutes to play in the period though, a shot from
Lillian Scardicchio (Mundelein, Il./Milwaukee Jr. Admirals U19) would be saved and fall on the stick of Hawkins, who stickhandled around two defenders and snuck it five-hole to give Hood a 1-0 lead.
The Blazers continued their offensive assault immediately, forcing Rams goalie Lila Chamoun to make six saves in a row. There would be no second goal though, and Hood would have to settle with its one-goal lead with 20 minutes left to play.
Clearly not content with just a one goal lead, the Blazers worked quickly to start the final frame, with Ancona getting her first of the game just 2:43 into the period to double their lead. Another penalty on Hood gave the Rams a chance to get on the board, and despite killing off the full penalty, a rifle of a shot from Rylee Bogren found the top left corner of the goal to cut the Blazers' lead in half.
That goal seemed to open the dam for both teams, as Framingham State would tie the game just 2:33 later. After a few minutes of relative calm, the Rams turned things up once again, peppering shot after shot on goal but to no avail. Even though Hood had a couple good shots on goal, it could not retake the lead, and Framingham State was able to find open space in the Blazers' zone and rifle a shot past Sohner to stun the crowd and take a 3-2 lead with less than three minutes to play.
After the puck bounced around for nearly two minutes in center ice and Hood's zone, the Blazers were finally able to get it in the offensive zone enough to pull Sohner, and Hawkins was able to clean up a rebound from Ancona to tie the game with 1:05 remaining and get the crowd on its feet. Both teams had a chance each to win the game in regulation with less than a minute left, but both defenses held strong to force an overtime period in the first game of the New Year.
Head coach
Josh Funk would send out Ancona, Cross, and
Alyssa Wilson (Scottsdale, Az./Dallas Stars Elite AAA) for the 3-on-3 overtime period, but Ancona and Cross would be the only ones needed to end the game, as a clean faceoff win to Cross allowed her to take the puck from her own end and speed past two Framingham State players for a 2-on-1 with Ancona, and despite Cross' shot hitting the post and going out, Ancona was right there to push the puck into the goal and secure the overtime win for the Blazers.
For the Opponent
Bogren, Alexis Brown, and Sarah Lewis scored for the Rams.
Kristina Jones, Rose Brien, and Milly Murphy each earned an assist.
Chamoun made 41 saves in the loss.
