Women’s ice hockey knocked down by Mustangs

FREDERICK, Md. – The return to the home ice of Skate Frederick for the first time in nearly a month did not go as the team had planned, falling to Middle Atlantic Conference rival Stevenson University 8-2.

Inside the Box Score
Renata Petrella (Cranberry Township, Pa./Nashville Jr. Predators U19) and Ella Phillips (Midlothian, Va./North American Hockey Academy) both scored for the Blazers.

Maggie Grijalva (Fullerton, Ca./Anaheim Lady Ducks AAA) made 10 saves and took the loss for the game, with Kamryn Sohner (Hilliard, Oh./Dallas Stars Elite AAA) making 24 saves in relief.

How it Happened
The Mustangs were on the attack as soon as the puck dropped, pressuring Hood's defense and keeping the players out there for longer shifts. The early pressure eventually paid off when Carleigh Barwick scored just 3:18 into the game to put the Blazers down 1-0 early. Despite getting three power play chances in the first period, Hood would only generate three shots across all six minutes of advantages and ended the period down a goal and a player due to a bench minor with just five seconds left.

Still on the penalty kill to start the second, the Blazers managed to successfully kill it and return to full strength, but that would be one of the only positives to come from this period. Stevenson would add to its lead just 3:45 into the period and, with Hood on the power play less than a minute later, score a short-handed goal to make it 3-0 less than five minutes in. The Blazers would finally cash in on their fifth power play to try and get back into the game still down 3-1, but the Mustangs would score twice in the final three minutes of the period and extend their lead to 5-1 heading into the final frame.

There would be no slowing down for Stevenson in the third period, as Jalyn Jones completed a hat trick with a pair of goals less than five minutes in to make it 7-1 in favor of the visitors, and after Phillips lit the lamp just over 12 minutes into the period, the Mustangs would get one more goal with just over four minutes to play to round out the scoring and hand Hood an 8-2 loss.

For the Opponent
Jones ended with four goals.

Carleigh Barwick finished with two goals.

Emily Carson made 24 saves in the win.

Analysis
The Mustangs outshot the Blazers 42-26.

Hood went 2-8 on its power play opportunities, while Stevenson went just 1-5.

The Blazers had a 30-27 edge in the faceoff circle.

Notes
Hood drops to 11-6-2 (5-6-2) and falls out of a playoff spot, while Stevenson improves to 3-14-1 (3-10-1).
