FREDERICK, Md. – The Hood College women's ice hockey team could not get anything past goalie Stephanie Skorupa, falling to Middle Atlantic Conference rival Alvernia 5-0 in a pivotal playoff game for both teams.
Inside the Box Score
Maggie Grijalva (Fullerton, Ca./Anaheim Lady Ducks AAA) made 35 saves in net.
Dakota Ormiston (Scituate, Ma./Portsmouth Abbey) blocked eight shots.
How it Happened
Alvernia took the offensive zone quickly to start the game and were able to get on the board just as quickly, potting two goals in 53 seconds to quickly put Hood on the back foot.
The Blazers recovered quickly, earning some time on the other end to try and get back into the game. Despite 16 shots on goal in the period, seven of which came from
Sofie Ancona (Grosse Point Farms, Mi./Saint Clair Shores Saints), none found the back of the net, and a third goal from the Golden Wolves with less than five seconds in the period made a 3-0 deficit after 20 minutes.
Period two saw the game's first penalties handed out, with the first two against Hood. Grijalva kept the team in it though, stopping everything she faced as the Blazers were hemmed in their own zone. Unfortunately, when the third penalty in a row was called on Hood, Alvernia did manage to capitalize on it to make it four straight goals for the visitors, which is where the score would sit heading into the second intermission.
Despite coming out with a fire in them, the Blazers still could not get anything past Skorupa, with their best chance through the first nine minutes getting blocked away at the last second. A fifth goal came for the Golden Wolves with just over 10 minutes to play, and Hood's best chance of getting on the board deflected off the woodwork with eight seconds left before the buzzer sounded to finalize the 5-0 defeat.

Khenzie Connick scored what would be the game-winning goal.
