Santo Provenzano and David Wilson combined for 66 points and the Hood College men's basketball team set a program record for most points scored in a game in its 104-95 win over Mount Aloysius College on Tuesday night at Thomas Johnson High School.
In the Blazers' home opener, Provenzano tied his own single-game best with 34 points on the strength of hitting 22-for-32 shots from the line and Wilson missed just one shot from the floor (13-for-14) on his way to a career-best 32 points. The sophomore duo led Hood through a physical and turnover-plagued game. The teams combined for 63 fouls, 83 foul shots and 60 turnovers as Hood improves to 2-1 and the Mounties fall to 0-3.
Brian Morris also played well running the point for Hood with a career-high eight assists and Sean Robine just missed his second straight double-double with 12 points and nine boards. Provenzano also hauled in 10 boards to lead the team and record his first double-double of the season and Jesse Gutekunst had a career-high 10 points.
Roman Mims led Mount Aloysius with 19 points and 12 rebounds and Justin Ohler had 17 points.
The Blazers' 104 points topped its previous best of 98, which came in last year's home opener on Jan. 3 against Valley Forge Christian College.
Early in the second half it didn't look like Hood would come out with the result it did. Just over two minutes after the break, the Mounties pulled ahead 58-47 on a layup by Roman Mims that capped off an 11-3 run. That, however, was the biggest lead they would enjoy all night, as Hood stormed back to take control of the game.
Over the next two minutes, 16 seconds, the Blazers, led by a pair of 3's from Robine, went on a 15-2 run to take a 63-60 lead—a advantage they would not relinquish.
With 3:16 remaining, a Wilson layup gave Hood its biggest lead of the night, 19 points, at 96-77 and the historic triple-digit figure came on a Provenzano free throw at the 1:05 mark.
Hood gets back in action this weekend in the Ramada Plaza Suites/Carnegie Mellon Tournament. The Blazers will play host Carnegie Mellon on Saturday at 3 p.m.
