Poor Second Half Dooms Men's Basketball in Loss to Widener

WASHINGTON--Kris Clarkson scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Widener used a strong second half to rally past Hood for a 72-62 win in the second game of the Gallaudet University Holiday Tournament Friday evening.

Widener advances to Saturday's championship game at 3 p.m. against Gallaudet, a 65-54 winner over John Jay in Friday's opening contest. Hood will face John Jay in the consolation game at 1 p.m.

Hood (2-3) held a 36-31 lead at halftime behind 11 points from freshman Tim Abercombrie, but the Blazers shot just 7-of-25 in the second half.

Widener (4-0) pulled even at 45 with 13:45 left in the game and then used a 10-1 run to build a 55-46 advantage.

Junior Sean Robine hit a pair of 3-pointers to cut Hood's deficit to three, 57-54, with under 10 minutes left, but Eissen Ford sank back-to-back jumpers and Clarkson later added a rebound and dunk as the Pioneers pulled away down the stretch.

The Blazers shot 46.4 percent (20-of-56) in the first half, including 5-of-13 from 3-point range to take the lead at the break.

Hood made only 7-of-26 of its 3-point attempts for the game.

Junior Santo Provenzano led the Blazers with 16 points, while sophomore Jesse Gutekunst posted his fourth straight double double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. He added six blocks and four assists.

Ford finished with 17 points for Widener, while Malcolm Thomas had 16 points and 10 rebounds.
