ALTOONA, Pa.--Hood junior Dennis Tressler hit a game-tying
3-pointer at the regulation buzzer to force overtime but Barry
Minemyer sank a jumper with two seconds left in the extra session
to give host Penn State Altoona a thrilling 68-67 win over the
Blazers Wednesday night at Adler Gymnasium.
Junior Darnell Edmonds, a former Gov. Thomas Johnson standout, made
1-of-2 free throws to give Hood (3-4) a 54-53 lead with 1:17 left
in regulation, but Penn State Altoona (2-3) moved back in front on
Dziabo Quintin's rebound and basket with 38 seconds left and looked
to have the game wrapped up after Ethan Stewart-Smith sank a pair
of free throws with three seconds to play.
However, following a Hood timeout, Tressler buried the game-tying
3-pointer at the horn to send the game into overtime.
The Lions held a four-point advantage three times in the extra
session, the last at 66-62 with 38 seconds remaining, but freshman
Tim Abercrombie, another former Gov. Thomas Johnson star, drained a
3-pointer with 33 ticks left and followed with a steal and lay-up
with five seconds to play to give Hood a 67-66 edge.
However, Minemyer's jumper after a Lion timeout gave the hosts the
victory.
Hood was fortunate to have a chance at a victory after a dismal
first half. The Blazers fell behind 14-0 in the opening five
minutes and trailed 33-19 at halftime thanks to 8-of-25 shooting
from the field.
The Blazers then came out on fire after the break, storming back
behind a 19-0 run early in the second half to take a 43-37
lead.
Hood later held a 51-44 advantage before Penn State Altoona used a
9-2 spurt to tie the game at 53 and set up the exciting finish.
The Blazers held a 38-34 advantage in rebounding and committed a
season-low 15 turnovers but shot just 9-of-19 from the free-throw
line.
Junior Santo Provenzano led Hood with 19 points, while sophomore
Jesse Gutekunst added 15 points, 16 rebounds, six blocks and four
assists.
Tyler Franklin led Penn State Altoona with 26 points. Stewart-Smith
added 11 and Minemyer 10.
The Blazers return to action Monday when they begin their home
slate against 2005 NCAA Division III Final Four participant York
College. Tip-off at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School is set for 7
p.m.
