The Catholic University softball team had too much offense for Hood College on Saturday, taking a non-conference doubleheader, 9-3 and 11-1.
Jennifer Guyer paced Hood (7-5) at the plate with five hits on the afternoon and Jamie Bussey had three—all of which came in the first game. Kathleen Ager hit a pair of homers for the Cardinals (15-10) and also had five total hits to go along with six runs batted in on the day.
Catholic pounded out 26 hits in the two games and although the Blazers had trouble scoring runs, it wasn't for lack of baserunners (22 hits) as they left 19 runners on base.
In the opener, after Catholic opened up a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on Ager's first homer of the day, Hood battled back and tied the contest in the bottom of the second on RBI singles from Katherine Law and Jamie Bussey.
The Cardinals responded with four runs in the third, powered by Ager's second shot of the game, and scored once more in the fifth and twice in the seventh to put the game away.
Sara Galloway picked up the win for Catholic with a complete game effort. She allowed three earned runs on 15 hits and struck out six. Lisa Green took the loss for Hood after tossing a complete game. She gave up seven earned runs on 14 hits and struck out four.
Catholic scored in every inning in the nightcap and ultimately forced the game to be called after five innings because of the eight-run mercy rule.
Kara Walker had three hits for the Cardinals in the game and Heather Holley, Ager and Marissa Weaver each had two.
The Blazers' lone run came in the second inning when Law drove in Jennifer Jones on a fielder's choice.
Galloway also tossed a complete game to earn the win for Catholic. She allowed one earned run on seven hits and fanned one. Caroline Woodhams, receiving her first collegiate start for Hood, took the loss. She last 4 1/3 innings before being relieved by Green.
Hood will look to get back on the winning track when it travels to Chatham College on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
