GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa.--Junior midfielder Christie Byrne scored her first goal of the season but it was not enough as the host Gwynedd-Mercy College field hockey team defeated Hood College 4-1 Saturday afternoon. The Blazers drop to 1-9 overall while the Griffins improve to 6-4.

The Griffins got on the board early as Erin Hill scored off a pass from Melissa Burks at the 2:29 mark. Four different players scored for Gwynedd-Mercy, which outshot Hood 19-2. Janine Reiner fed Erin Reedy for the eventual game-winner at the 27:59 mark of the first half. Bethany Wagner and Mary Gerth also found the back of the cage for the Griffins.

Byrne's unassisted goal came at the 65:46 mark of the second half. Goalkeeper Ashley Saylor made 12 saves for the Blazers.

The field hockey team returns to action Monday at York College at 4 p.m. in a non-conference game.
