OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The field hockey squad battled the No. 1 seed in Stevenson in a scenario they know best and fell 4-1 after a big Mustang first half on the road on Wednesday night.
Inside the Box Score
Emma Numme (Shrub Oak, NY/Lakeland) had the team's only shot
Madeline Moreno (Mansfield, N.J./Warren Hills Regional) picked up a defensive save in the match.
Allison Wallin (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) made five saves on the evening.
How it Happened
Early on in the match the game started out in Hood's favor as Stevenson picked up four straight fouls. However, with just under four minutes played, the Mustangs drew themselves a penalty corner and Sydney Aylward converted their first goal of the game. Then with just over four minutes to go in the quarter, the Mustangs netted another goal, this time off a penalty stroke, and took the early lead 2-0 heading into the second quarter.
Although the Mustangs started hot in the first quarter, the Blazer defense stood tall in the second, allowing zero points after four Mustang corners. Hood managed to keep their defense spry as in the third quarter; Wallin denied two Mustang shots on goal.
Unfortunately for the Blazers in the fourth period Stevenson's Gracy Catalano knocked back a shot past a now gassed Hood defense and put the Mustangs up 3-0. With a late-game lead, many would think about taking their foot off the gas, but Stevenson decided to keep pushing on and adding more offensive pressure. However, it would be one of Hood's defenders to put a stop to the madness because in the 50th of the match Moreno snuck behind Wallin and made a crucial defensive save. Not long after this miraculous defensive stop by Moreno, Stevenson converted on another penalty corner and went up 4-0, ultimately getting away with the win.
