ANNVILLE, Pa.--Four of the five Blazer starters reached double
figures to power the Hood College men's basketball team to an 88-72
victory over McDaniel College in the championship game of the 15th
Annual Lebanon Valley College Rinso Marquette Tournament Saturday.
The Blazers captured their second in-season tournament
championship after taking the title at last season's Moravian
College Greyhound Starters Classic.
The Blazers trailed for a total of only 1:03 in the entire
tournament on three brief possessions in the first half of today's
game.
In the first stanza against McDaniel, the Blazers and Green
Terror found themselves deadlocked on five occasions. McDaniel's
Ryan Finch converted a fast-break jumper to give the Green Terror a
slim 37-35 lead with 26 seconds remaining, but sophomore Tim
Abercrombie fed senior Sean Robine under the hoop for a layup at
the buzzer and the two squads went into the lockerroom tied at
37-37.
Robine led all scorers with 15 points and the Blazers committed
only four turnovers in the first stanza.
Hood broke the game open in the second half with a 24-8 burst in
the first 7:44 to assume a 61-45 lead, capped by a Jesse Gutekunst
layup. The Blazers maintained their double-figure advantage
virtually the rest of the half; the Green Terror got within nine at
the 8:52 mark on a three-pointer in transition by Ryan Brandenberg,
but Abercrombie answered right back for the Blazers with a triple
on Hoodýs next possession.
The Blazers shot a scorching 65.5 percent (19-29) from the field
in the second half. The Green Terror, meanwhile, shot just 32.6
percent from the floor and did not attempt a single foul shot in
the second period.
Robine, who was selected as the tournament Most Valuable Player,
poured in a career-high 23 points on 9-of-15 from the field
including 4-of-7 from behind the arc. Abercrombie tallied 18
points, including 14 Hood's second half scoring explosion, to go
along with seven rebounds and four assists. Gutekunst finished with
16 points and six boards and sophomore Ryan Junghans, who also
earned all-tournament accolades contributed 13 points.
The Blazers and Green Terror will square off again in just three
days when Hood travels to Westminster Tuesday for its first round
contest in the second annual Provident Bank Pride of Maryland
Tournament at 7:30 p.m.
