LEXINGTON, Va--Freshman Nick Scott's desperation three-pointer
at the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime clanged
off the back of the rim as the Emory University Eagles escaped with
a narrow 62-59 victory in the nightcap of the Washington & Lee
University Tournament Saturday at the Warner Center.
The Blazers slip to 7-3 on the season while the Eagles up their
record to 6-3.
Hood raced out to a 12-4 lead in the opening minutes of the
first half as junior Jesse Gutekunst recorded seven of the team's
first dozen points. The Blazers maintained their advantage until
the 5:57 mark of the first half when a layup by Alex Ford-Carther
tied the score at 22-22. The Eagles took their first lead of the
contest (26-24) with 3:40 to play before halftime on a jumper by
Ford-Carther. In fact, Emory held the Blazers to just one field
goal over the final 5:45 of the first half and took a 32-27 lead at
intermission.
The Blazers trailed by as many as nine in the early part of the
second half but rallied to tie the game at 45 on an Anthony Bennett
free throw. But Hood was unable to leapfrog the Eagles until the
1:54 mark when a bucket by Bennett snapped a 55-55 tie.
The Eagles answered at the other end on a jumper by Eric Barvin
and, following a Hood turnover, regained the lead on a layup by
Shawn Bailey with 49 seconds to play in regulation. A layup by Ryan
Junghans with 29 ticks remaining was off the mark and the Blazers
were forced to foul. Adrian Sosa went to the line for a 1-and-1
opportunity and made the first to make it a three-point game. His
second foul shot would have made it a two-possession affair but it
was no good. However, the Eagles grabbed the offensive rebound.
This time it was Shawn Bailey who went to the charity stripe and
he missed the front end of his 1-and-1, but Emory once again snared
the carom. Sosa then converted both foul shots to give the Eagles a
five-point cushion (62-57) with eight seconds on the clock. Senior
Darnell Edmonds banked in an uncontested layup and the Blazers
called timeout with four seconds to play.
On the ensuing inbounds play, Hood immediately fouled Sosa who
missed both of his free throw attempts. Sophomore Nnamdi Uzouwku
hauled in the second miss by Sosa and the Blazers had one last shot
to send the game into overtime. Hood's inbounds pass was batted
down by Emory but Scott alertly grabbed the loose ball and heaved
it towards the basket, but his shot rimmed out at the Eagles came
away with the victory.
Gutekunst registered his 21st career double-double with
game-highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Sean Robine netted
13 points, including all three of Hood's three-pointers on the
night. Bennett chipped in seven points and four boards, while
Uzoukwu and freshman Michael McCarrick each grabbed six rebounds.
The Blazers take on the Merchant Marine Academy Mariners
Saturday in the consolation game at 6 p.m.
