Eagles' Hot Perimeter Shooting Too Much for Blazers

FREDERICKSBURG, Va.--The University of Mary Washington Eagles drained a school-record 18 three-pointers en route to a 76-60 Capital Athletic Conference victory over the Hood College men's basketball team Saturday afternoon.

The Blazers slip to 5-2 on the season and 1-1 in the CAC while the Eagles remain perfect at 5-0 and 2-0 in the conference.

UMW came into the game as the CAC's top three-point shooting squad, boasting a .455 percentage from beyond the arc. The Eagles, who averaged 15 triples in their first four games, eclipsed the school mark of 17 three-pointers set last season with 18 threes on the day. Kiernan Whitworth, Jon Pierce and A.J. Fitzgerald all nailed four treys while Matt Hale connected on three for the home team.

The Eagles got off to a fast start opening up an 18-4 lead within the first 6:11 seconds. The Blazers trailed by as many as 19 points in the first half but mounted a comeback towards the end of the stanza. Hood reeled off 10 unanswered points over a stretch of 4:21 to pull to within 32-23 with 2:30 remaining. The Blazers also scored the final seven points of the half to draw to within five, 35-30, at the break.

Mary Washington used the three-ball to quickly push the lead back to 14 at the start of the second half, nailing three three-pointers in the first 2:41 to make it 44-30. A pair of free throws and a trey by sophomore Ryan Junghans briefly cut the deficit to single-digits but Whitworth responded with his fourth three-pointer of the game which stretched the lead back to 12 and the Blazers never got closer than 10 the rest of the way.

Four Blazers netted double figures led by Ryan Junghans' 16 points. Senior Sean Robine had 14 while junior Jesse Gutekunst finished with 12 and senior Darnell Edmonds chipped in 11. Sophomore Tim Abercrombie grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and dished out four assists.

Hood returns to action Wednesday hosting CAC rival St. Mary's College of Maryland at 7 p.m. at Thomas Johnson High School.
